That's very similar to the one my Mum uses to make ballgowns & prom dresses, she's had it at least 20 years to my knowledge, and as far as I know it's never let her down

For context, my mother is someone who can normally kill anything with a plug on it in less than 6 months

Her indoors says that for home furnishings/curtains as well as clothes you need

Double feed dog
Ability to take multiple layers
True stretch stitching

She also says work out exactly what you need and then get a machine that does that rather than a multiple purpose machine. The fewer features the better. She also recommends finding a specialist shop to a) advise you and b) give you somewhere to get it serviced as they need servicing just like cars.

The two top brands in her view is Pfaff or Janome. Her mother taught textiles at school and they used Janomes - robust, durable and versatile. Pfaff is a little more refined.

She has nothing against them - just think that the other two brands are the best.

BTW her mother uses a Pfaff at home and she is a very fussy textile person - indeed an annoying perfectionist (unless I want my clothes mended then she's great!!)

Stay away from Brother, Ive got thru 2 recently so gave up, only being used to lite weight work and 1 just died, the 2nd went bang in a flash, both motor issues from the feel of it, they were only £150 models but I was very disappointed with a brand that isnt cheapo.

So three votes for Pfaff then - Truda, MIL and dpb.

What more do you need to know?

I recently got a Brother off eBay which is much better than the 20 year old Husqvarna I had. Heard Janome and Pfaff are good, but if she's going to buy from a shop, then they all come with warranty, so don't worry. What it does is more important.

It allows the sewing of stretchy fabrics (quilt covers etc) without puckering or thread breaking.
