So, they are on benefits. They commit a crime. Get a fine and have their benefits reduced.
I might be being thick here, but we the taxpayer are still paying their fine for them
Benefits should stop immediately and they should be forced to do some menial job and the fine deducted from whatever wages they receive

Personally I think anyone who has been claiming benefits for more than two years continuously should be required to perform some sort of community service to continue claiming.
It is meant to be a safety net for those who have hit hard times, not a career choice.
Anyone on benefits who commits crimes routinely should have them removed completely. It's never that simple of course, they've got kids who shouldn't suffer or a drug addiction to support etc etc etc. And then there is the Human Rights brigade who maintain it is everybodies right to lounge around on the dole and nick the odd car now and then.
IMHO of course

1. Benefits should be paid to those who do work for the community.
2. Commit a crime and you work for "free" for the balance fine.
3. Any previous convictions should also be taken when into consideration when passing judgement to make punishment more severe as clearly rehabilitation is not working for them.
4. Benefits should be claimed on a descending scale over a period of time to be gradually replaced with food/clothing/fuel vouchers.

As Zohan says, its a step and it might make a bit of a difference.
We can expect huge protests from the PC Plonkers I expect.
About time that lawbreakers were made to experience something more of a deterrent.

Ah that would be the Scoobynet definition of socialism - the real thing being something quite different.
God there is some real crap talked in here... it's only when I read Gear Head and his clan's crap in the F1 Section that I realise it could be worse!

I don't think that the law breakers would actually stop and think about losing their benefits just as they are about to do some more shoplifting or whatever. They are mostly concentrating on not getting caught.

But that is true with all parties, cons, labs, libs etc. Imagine if the Greens got in and implemented everything in their manifesto, we'd be proper fcuked!

A few issues.
Withdrawing money from those who have none anyway, its just another "headline" and pretty pointless. Take £2 a week from benefits, okay, but £25/ week. Another stupid Tory headline grabber.
Second issue about working for benefits. In 2009 JSA was £2.88 BN out of a total £73 BN DWP budget. Thats only 4%. However disability benefit was £16 BN which is 22%. Can you force disabled people to work for their benefits, not an easy problem to sort out. Not saying they shouldn't address these issues, but its more complex.
How do you force a single mother with no skills to work for her benefit. What happens to the kids.

What is pissing most people off is that some people are making it a career choice. Everyone knows someone taking the ****. Even have some in my family, I'm ashamed to say. To then go and commit crime is just adding insult by biting the hand that feeds you.
One of my colleagues from work lives in what he calls "giro city" where he is literally the only person working on his street. What really pisses him off, at the tender age of 22, is they all look down on him for it.
These people maintain they cannot find work. I work in a factory that employs around 350 people, most of them of East European origin. When you ask the newer ones how long it took them to find work when they arrived in this country they average 2 to 4 weeks.
The work is there, some just don't want it.
