Default House insurance

Well last night we shut the kitchen door, went to bed at 9pm and fed the dogs emergency chum mixer - we normally leave all doors open for the dogs to have a free roam, normally let them out at 10pm and ran out of chicken...

I awake at 4am to what sounds like something ripping... I ignore it but then at 4:30 hear it even louder and had to investigate....

I get down stairs and tread in what I can only say felt like sick... It wasn't it was dog poo... I turned the lights on to see a mine field of dog turd

There was so much... I knew I couldn't tell the dogs off as we don't give them chum for a reason! Being a cream carpet I had to carpet clean instantly... Sorry neighbours

To make things worse, Lucy our 6month old beagle was on the sofa, she had ripped a hole in the middle back section right where you lean against...

Now the sofa is 4yrs old and I wish we had never got leather...
We are moving in less then a month and are changing house insurance..

Should I claim on my current policy for accidental damage? - or if I cancel it in a month would I need to pay it all back?

So the dog did this accidentally

When you change insurance new company will want to know about previous claims.

The dog ate the sofa is an accident... As it didn't know it wasn't food... I don't mind telling the new insuance just don't want to have to pay £££ if I end it in a few months...

I think you will find that your insurance won't cover damage from a pet, it didn't when used to work for Direct Line home insurance.

You will need to make your claim on the existing insurance and as David has said, you will need to declare this on your new policy.
I'd be inclined to make your claim and stick with them until renewal time, otherwise it may cost you more for your new policy.

If they accept your claim there is no question of you having to pay anything back as you were on cover when it happened.

Dog didn't suffer any whiplash did it?

Neighbours dog chewed holes in their fences and ate their settee - well parts of it amongst other things, it was not covered by home-owners insurance as it was not classed as an accident and it doesn't cover damage caused by their pets.

you need to read the small print in you exclusions section of the policy.

We do have cover that includes pet cover... tbh we are moving in hopefully a month and was looking at ditching this sofa as we were gonna buy new in the new huse.

Just thinking... We have never claimed and the premiums always go up. We will sell the 2 seated then we move as we have never used it and am thinking claim and sell a new three sestet at the same time.... I just don't want to Pay more house insurance on this policy then nessasery as the other policy on the other house will be active the day we move,,,

by pet cover does it cover damage to your property and/or to a third party, say it bites someone or gets hit by a car and causes damage to the say a vehicle+vet bills? l

when you change cover over the new company will ask you if you have any old, pending or existing claims. failure to disclose will mean that the cover is void should you need to claim again and you may have trouble getting future cover. Bit like car insurance in this respect. They do share info with each other to prevent people just moving from one to another and putting through umpteen claims. Not saying you do that but there are processes in place.

A call to your insurance co will clear it up - good luck!

Sorry maybe im not being clear... The cover is I case the dog wrecks the house.

I don't intend hiding the fact I've made a claim. i just want to know that if I claim and cancel the policy a month or two later will I need to pay anything back?

You wouldn't need to pay anything back due to having made a claim. If you paid an annual premium you normally would get a pro rata refund on premiums if terminating mid term, but it's usually simplest to change insurers at renewal date.

That's pretty good cover, covering doggy damage!

Our house insurance covers us for dog damage too, fortunately
