Default Apple gives you a free ipod after 6 years

Does not work for everyone, but for those who have the 1st generation ipod nano you get a free one

http://www.apple.com/support/ipodnano_replacement/

I wouldnt mind so much as mine has lain in the drawer for over 5 years

the 6th gen nano is pants though

they have dramatically reduced the functionality, to the point where I had to either pay way over the odds for a generation 5 (for my daughters bday) or buy an ipod classic

I have bought the classic

Its not that bad. Very small, great touchscreen, but maybe not for everyone.

Fair enough it may not be all that but considering mine is over 6 years old, has sat in the drawer for about 4 years of that, doesnt keep its charge very well and has dubious music on it, a free one cant be bad

true -- and maybe compared to the gen 1 it is not too bad (and hats off to Apple)

but when I did 5 mins research on it a few weeks ago, I could not work out why the new (if you could get them) 5th gen nano's were twice the price of the gen 6, and indeed second hand 4th and 5th gens were about the same price as a new gen 6

so i did a bit of digging -- and the 6th gen is basically a old style shuffle with a touch screen

the classic looked like a much better deal

Thats the spirit. Get onto ebay, buy the 1st gen dirt cheap and then trade it in for a free xmas present

I just tried 2 dead ones, and both serial numbers wern't recognised. I did have another dead one somewhere else.
Did it work for you, Swiss?

EDIT, should have gone specsavers.

But, as above did it work?

Yes it did work, it really must be the luck of the draw in terms of serial numbers

Got an email from Apple confirming it all.

Thanks for the link Swiss

Worked on both the ones i tried. I thought if one worked it was likely they both would as they were bought roughly the same time at the start of 2006.

As per the others sending me out a returns package to send it back to them

Was thinking the very same during my tea.

Toad in the hole BTW. The Toad was burnt though or was it the hole ?

Anyway I diversify. Yes i'd be suprised also if they had a massive amount of 1st generation nanos when they will probably get requests in the 10's if not 100's of thousands.

We will see though

I doubt they hold stock of those . And even if they decided to replace like for like, they would have to retool the whole line which would not be cost effective. Much simpler to just send out free gen 6 ones. But.......we could all be getting dodgy 1st gen that they have squirrelled away in some land fill who know

Has anyone recieved their returns pack yet?
I've got a card from the posty to say there is a package too big for the letter box to collect, as I haven't ordered anything else I have to assume it's the returns kit but I expected a pre paid iffy bag or similar?
Anyone got theirs?

Well ive registered mine today, just got to wait for the box to arrive.. mines in mint condition and with a good battery life too..... shame really but hey ho.. don't want to end up with a knackered unit cos it overheated, although after 6 years you'd of thought it would have happened by now :/

I think i prefer the original Nano to the new touch screen version anyway, even with less capacity
