SKY + HD connection to tv question
We are getting a SKY+ HD box installed next week - how will this connect to the TV, just via the HDMI and/or via SCART for the non-hd channels.
A new TV going in at the weekend if not sooner and i will need to re-cable to this and want to loose any extraneous cabling, will run a spare HDMI cable in case one goes **** up or we add something else mind.
TV is mounted to the wall so i want to keep the cabling to a minimum.

HDMI only. It makes no difference that you may watch SD channels. The box will output on one channel only, and even if it could output on 2, why would you want to? You'd have to switch your TV channel to watch SD stuff.

Sky HD out into your HD TV via HDMI. With re: to the HD Audio Sky currently only output HD Audio via optical so you will have to run an optical lead to the TV is you want surround sound 5.1 which will only be 2 channel i.e. left and right if you dont have a surround sound amplifier.
If in future you do decide to incorporate an amplifier which i highly recommend when watching HD/Blu Ray material the difference is unbelievable.
What I would do which is probably a little premature for me to mention so soon is to have all yours sources i.e. Sky HD, PS3, Xbox, BluRay plugged into the amplifier and then have a single HDMI from the Amp to TV. This way you allow the amplifier to do all the switching when you switch sources from PS3 to Sky and so on.
If you arent too bother about the using the optical lead from Sky HD to TV just use the red/white which isnt as good quality in distributing audio but IMO HD content should be heard in the same as it is viewed.
Hope this helps.

Buy a HDMI 1.4 cable and your done
then buy http://www.electricpig.co.uk/2010/02...t-s400-review/
I have the full 10k+ setup in my toy room, but in the front room where the wife HATES wires i had to get this, it has switchable HDMi 1.4 ports.
reason im saying 1.4 over 1.3 is Ethernet is carried over the 1.4 extra channel thus you dont have to pipe an ethernet cable to your TV, if its got it, to enable all the new online ****, its all done by the cable.
If your wife likes wires then http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/42...921/index.html
with the intelligent Speaker system, its what i use and the sounds perfecto

For now you only need the HDMI for audio and video.
When you get a surround sound system with an amp I'd then output the audio into that via an optical cable.

HDMI does it perfectly. You have to select it when you turn the tv on. With mine the HDMI fires up if you switch the Sky box on from standby which it will automatically revert to overnight if you dont switch the Sky box off. This is after you turn the tv on.

Shouldn't be needed if the TV/amp supports ARC (audio return channel). If so its HDMI all the way.
Our TV only has one HDMI connection to it.
V+ box connects via a/v amp, as does blueray, console etc. Sky HD box should be no different.
Just a word of warning the; ARC input/output on our TV is on the HDMI 2 input. ARC doesn't work on any of the other HDMI inputs (its actually labelled 'ARC' but there's not much light down the back of there )

sky box:
hdmi cable is what you need but only carries 2 channel sound (stereo) to the tv thanks to the poor electronic configuration in the sky box.
(the hdmi can carry all 5.1/7.1 etc)
If you have an av amp like me, you need to use another connection, the digital lead or an optical lead, this is where you get your 5.1 (if broadcast by the sky channel) to get the better sound out of it.

I plug the HDMI into my yamaha amp & then a digital coax lead into the amp, then a hdmi lead goes to the tv for the pic & the amp does the magic for dolby digital or standard 5.1 or stereo depending on what the programme/film is broadcast with
