Suddenly £20-£40 installs don't look such good value. What is the signal strength like on your system in the dry Salsa?

Phil
We only get that when it is really raining hard/storm.
Check your signal strenght when dry should be at least 3/4 across.
If not this could be the cause for picture break up in the rain. Or was it a heavy down pour. If it was then in my experience it is normal.

Hello

This is a common problem. It effects all digital transmission, including satellite internet if that's your thing.

Having said that, it really needs to be pouring it down to disrupt the signal badly. It has probably happened 2 or 3 times in the last year.

Have a look here: http://www.satcure.com/index.htm for some interesting stuff about Sky Digital. And your problem here: http://www.satcure.com/digifaq2.htm#pixel .

Steve.

With analogue you get "sparklies" as the signal level drops, with digital you're either going to get blocks or if it falls below the threshold a muted picture.

Yea cannee change the laws of physics

I'm not sure how much they are now, but I have 1.0m dish and universal LNB. When the bloke came to fit the Digibox for Sky he couldn't believe the signal strength as it was almost at max.

No picture degradation even in snow storms

If you are in apoor reception area, it may be worth considering.

The original owners of my house had Sky analogue. When Sky installed digital after I moved in, the fitter used the original dish changing only the LNB.

He said this would help to improve the signal, and that the new dishes aren't designed as well as the old ones!

No problems, even when raining very hard, snowing or high winds....

The wind knocked my dish out of alignment once (signal strength went down to one bar) -- was OK most of the time but no reception in the rain. It was easy to see where to put it back to though.

What you need to do is get someone on a ladder to shift it around a few fractions of a degree, and someone else watching the signal strength indicator. A mobile phone will come in handy.

Mobile phone didn't work too well today either. Mobiles and satellite TV all broadcast in the microwave band, and microwaves are absorbed by water (that's why microwave ovens work).

[Kids were complaining this morning -- no reception on Nick Replay but fine on all the other channels. ]

It does become a pain in the backside when the kids are wtching something and it freezes and turns off, try telling a 3 year old whose watching nick jnr that he can't carry on watching it because of the weather.

Hi Phil,

Signal strength meters differ on different digi-boxes. Unless you compare your signal strength with a known good setup with the same box it won't help you much.

I have had Sky Digital in from the start can only remember it going off once in a snow storm. Never get problems with blocking during rain etc and the pictures first class even on my 46" screen.

Most problems with dgital reception centre around poor signal reception witch can be caused by dish alignment, lnb security, lnb contamination, high resistance on cable or ends and water ingress of lnb or cable. Not forgeting a clear line of sight (Trees etc).

Most coax cables suffer from the environment over time and some installers used owners old analogue cable which could already have been in for 10 years.

Best bet is to get a good installer out with his own strengh meter and get him to prove the signal both at the tv andd at the receiver.

might sound silly, but check your dish isn't too close to any trees or house creepers. We cut ours back - no more problems.
