I read that there are ways of setting up a Bel 990 to not give false alarms next to supermarkets etc. Can anyone point me at the definative instructions please?

You can minimise them by putting it into City mode (right button on the top) mine still beeps at anything & everything in that mode, but as I switch it off in town it's not such an issue.

You are right, you can set them up to minimise false alarms.
It's best to switch off the X band as thats the worst.
I have one in the car and from memory i think you hold down the button on the far left for a few seconds to enter the mode and scroll through the various bands opting which ones to activate.
