Default India considering boycotting London Olympics- Will they be missed?

They're taking their bat home blaming a company (Dow)who bought Union Carbide in 2001 for the 1984 Bhopal disaster.

Dow has a sponsorship deal with London. I can see if it was Union Carbide, but I think they are barking up the wrong tree.

Discuss?

Maybe WE could save even MORE money by withdrawing their foreign aid?

Wonder how many jobs for 16-25 year olds THAT would pay for, eh Dave? Cleggy?

It is understandable when you consider the dreadful consequences of what happened because of the negligence displayed by the company owned by Union Carbide.

It was a shameful incident and the attitude of the Indians is only to be expected.

No. Judging by their sports performance, they won't be missed at all. But in principle, I understand India's point, and agree with it. To keep international relations in harmony, Britain may revise the sponsors' list. I don't think that there is any other hidden agenda behind India kicking off for that but the fresh wounds over Bhopal tragedy. People can speculate as much as they like. One more thing, if Britain doesn't sympathise, India won't become Britain's biggest ememy forever. They will just end up with another scar, and let it heal with time. They just won't attend, which is not a big loss for the sports world. Just a bit of an unrest within international relations, but that will soon change with some other sweet n' sugary international deal between both countries.

The basic fact is that the organisers were a bit thoughtless when it came to their negotiations.

Seems a bit petty, does it not? Dow never even owned union carbide at the time.

Aye, an AMERICAN company fekked up and were allowed to do so by negligent and corrupt INDIAN officials, then BRITAIN gets blamed for not gnashing it's teeth enough.

You couldn't make it up, could you?

There'd be a lot of empty buildings in Mumbai if all UK companies pulled out of India.

Really? How many empty buildings do you think there would be in London if India did the same? You need to wake up and smell the coffee (not grown in the UK btw) mate, the world is a very different place to the one of our fathers. The tables are turning, it is not clear who needs who more

The Indian government has thier fair share of issues with corruption, what i find more aberrant is the indifference shown to the weakest members of society who they just do not care about and leave to die. Then the is the spending on the 2010 commonwealth games http://www.channel4.com/news/india-c...nding-on-games and the illegal child labour http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfNV_l5Lvwc then there is the recent food aid scandal http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news...-1226205206026

it seems somewhat hypocritical of them really and they should separate sport from politics.

You seem to be forgetting where a lot of the wealth originally came from. India was regarded as the gold bird that was plundered for it's wealth!

So what? That's going back two centuries.

Should WE start on the Germans and French because they came and plundered? Or the Romans? Or the Danes?

Nevertheless, the connection is there and that is what sparks it all off.

What can you expect after such an awful episode and the suffering of the people at the time?

and yet India somehow manage to play cricket against Pakistan given the animosity and hatred of each other. You have to wonder about the motivation behind the possible Olympics boycott. India do not seem to have too much trouble buying weapons/technology from the US, given Union Carbide (now part of Dow) was an American company. or accepting Billions in Aid from the UK and the US. Funny they seem to baulk at one sponsor (Dow). As i said i wonder what the real motivation is, perhaps to divert attention in other areas???

Well I thought the basic idea of international sport was to engender understanding and more friendly feelings between nations.

As far as the real motivation is concerned...your guess will doubtless be as good any any I might make. Needs must perhap's!
