I got told today that the horse I used to own died over the weekend

She was 8 years old, I had her from birth and sold her at just over 3 years old. I called her Mink because of her colour but nicknamed her Minx due to her cheeky manner.
I used to spend literally night and day with her.
We had a very close bond She would do anything for me
By the age of one she was walking in and out of a horse box, wearing a saddle (could put my weight on her but never for more than 30 seconds because of development), lunging, long reigning. I could walk around the field with her behind me. Lie on the grass with her lying beside me. Lie in the stable with her head on my legs sleeping.

An amazing experience to have a foal from birth I am so priviliged to have been through it

I was devastated when we had to sell her The new owners kept in touch, loved her to bits. Mink never forgot me She was championship material winning so many shows in hand and in saddle.

Well, she became very ill a few weeks back and eventually got diagnosed with equine diabetes which is incurable. She collapsed at the weekend, dying shortly after and tests found an anlarged pituatary gland with a tumour in it.

Rest in peace little one

My grandad was a farrier. It used to break his heart to put down a horse, especially if was healthy but just could'nt run fast any more Some owners did'nt seem to show any emotion when one of their horses died which I never seemed to understand. To Most however it would be like losing a member of the family.

My condolences

Chelle, that's gutting.

Just remember the good times, sounds like you had loads This was my baby:

I got her as part of a share (the other owner only having her because it was the "in thing"...) so she was mine and I too was there day or night. When I started the loan she had been mistreated and you couldn't touch her head at all, cowered at teh back of her stable and always cantered on the wrong leg ..needless to say within a few careful months she was a different horse Still occasionally cantered on the wrong leg (even in a 6m circle!!) but she wasn't a show horse, so it didn't really matter.

Anyway, the other owner decided she didn't want her anymore and there was no way I could afford to keep her on my own, so she was sold to an awful riding school However, we had 1000's of great times and thats the key thing to remember...Sounds like Mink had a great life and I'm sure the start you gave her played a great part in that Sounds like she didn't suffer too much.

Keep smilin' and remember the good times...

Jen (almost in tears in the middle of the office! - happy tears though )
