Default Best thing to sharpen kitchen knives/scissors?

Hi folks,

What would you suggest? I've tried the sharpening stone and oil but I'm rubbish at it.

Bought one of these

http://www.niton999.co.uk/shop/produ...ode_AA323.html

but it's not really doing the job.

My kitchen scissors wouldn't even cut open a bag of chips the other night!

Cheers

A Swedish Tormek whetstone with leather honing wheel is the Rolls Royce answer but quite expensive and you need to know how to use them properly. Hardly worth it for just a few knives now and again.

I have used a variety of things and actually found that the sort in your link was the best of all.

Re scissors - do check that the middle screw is tight as this makes all the difference.

I use a stone and a steel but if you want an all round sharpener try one of these:

£2 one in Maplin at the minute - triple wheel grinder thing - terrific (got one yesterday as our expensive John Lewis one is pants).

+1 on the anysharp, quick and easy but it'll wear through your knives faster, i wouldn't use anything too nice on it.

For knives I swear by a sharpening stone, hand held, like a steel but better. Light use replaces an edge, harder pressure will put an edge on a dull blade.

Those triple wheeled things tear great shreds out of softer knives

I have one of these, it's great. I even sharpened a small sword on it a while back.
