Italian cruise ship....
Bloody Hell.
A sandbar (whatever that is) can create a 30 metre hole?!

The clue is in the name ....
Bet they all believed that one .... Can't have been anything to do with sailing on Friday 13th I guess ....
That is a bleddy big hole though. Someone scr3wed up big time there.
Dave
Passengers were eating dinner on Friday evening, when they heard a loud bang, and were told that the ship had suffered electrical problems, one passenger told Italy's Ansa news agency.

LOL at the 'expert' on teh BBC saying it shouldn't happen thinking it s a design fault.
FFS put a 30ft hole in the side of any steel boat and it will sink, the fact it went on its side is probably down to the way the sea bed lies underneath, obviously it was brought into shollow water when it was realised was terminally damaged to aid rescue. Good call IMO.

Yeah yeah, I know. But that was the original report. I guess that was before they saw the 100 ft gash and the ship keeling right over!
As for "design faults", well the gash is on the port side but it's listing to starboard ....

Every officer and crew member responsible for any aspect of safety on board is trained and drilled up to the required standard.
This looks like a freak accident due to the electrical system failing, causing loss of propulsion which allowed the ship to drift into the rocks.

So what happens to her now?
I am presuming that it can't be patched up in situ and hauled away.
Just left to rot as a bizarre tourist attraction?
Claims for this are going to be horrendous for new boat and 4000 claims at say £5k a time*?

*And that's just for whiplash "injuries"

I guess that, David.
Remember all but one of the nine sunken ships at Pearl Habor were refloated. Some were repaired and made sea worthy and some were just refloated to allow them to be towed to a ship yard as salvage for building new ships.
So I guess they'll patch the hole, pump it out and refloat it. Then tow it to where ever it is to be broken up or repaired.

It' s a weird one that's for sure. Calm seas, modern ship, good record yet somehow it ended up 3 or 4 m,iles off course and hit some rocks hard enough to tear a 30m hole in the hull and leave a large lump of rock embedded in her.
The electrial system theory is dubious as these ships have a mass of backup systems for this very reason.
Something does not quite add up at the moment!
