Falklands Tensions and Sabre Rattling
The Navy is sending HMS Dauntless to the South Atlantic to flex a bit of muscle.

However, surely the claims of the ships capabilities are a bit optimistic?
As I remember, in 1982, the main vulnerability of the task force was due a lack of over the horizon radar early warning resulting it some hastily designed Sea King AWACS choppers.
Now, does the new radar on Dauntless overcome this over the horizon problem and if so how?

I think we should give the Argies the Falklands but lease it back for say a 100 year period and just carry on as we are. So the Argies get to say the place is theirs and no one cares about what happens in 100 years. We should have done the same for NI. Didn't we do that for Hong Kong? Seemed to work OK.

Was talking to a guy with a Falkland Island passport and he said that they do not want to be considered Argentinian. He also said that before 1982, Argentina was very good to them and helped out with education and health. The President at the time was coming up for election, wasn't very popular locally so came up with an awesome idea to win public support - it didn't work. But what it did do was cut off all help from Argentina.

Well it would save a lot of money in keeping a strong military presence on the Islands and the possible cost of a repeat war.
Re the bonus - I told them a long time ago to give it to charity

There was talk of some American firm investing millions if not billions into one of the companies down there that had made the oil finds.
If that happens the Falkland islanders will only have friendly fire to worry about!

War of words only IMHO.
Back in the 80's Galtieri and his millitary Junta were ready to be ousted so he needed a damn good PR exercise.....take back the Malvinas !

You have to feel sorry for the seventeen-year old conscripts who were sent there thinking it was going to be a paradise island with palm trees... ended up risking hypothermia and nicking food from dustbins.

The question is, do we have the political will to use it, should the need arise? If the Argies succeed in a sneak attack and capture part or all of the islands, are we willing to go to war over it again? There was a bit in a paper a week ago where they said that an airliner full of Argie troops that gets an "emergency" diversion to the main base could potentially occupy the base, make the airstrip unusable for the Typhoons with little we could to do to rectify it.

Blimey Steve, a Fairy Gannet. Not seen one of those since the 70's air show days....always looked a bit odd when it made a pass with one of the props turned off
I think we opted for radar picket ships instead.......... In fact wasn't HMS Sheffield a Radar Picket?

The reason the Sheffield took the hit was due to the radar being switched off, so the satcoms could call to London!
