Default Who knew the Inland Revenue were on strike today?

Tried ringing them.

They have chosen to strike on deadline day for getting your tax return in.

Where are the screams of outrage we herard when teachers went on strike?

Oh....wait...the tax men don't "child-mind for free" for us do they?

Yep, been in the news. Govt is well peeved as it means that anybody with a 100 quid fine can legitimately claim the excuse that the HMRC were on strike and don't have to pay LOL

They can fine me every month if I don't submit sub-contractor returns on time!

I missed by 1 day.... so they bill me for £100 because I was a day late telling them that I don't actually owe them anything last month.

Great, isn't it?

Just makes you laugh that you can't get through to them to pay them and yet if you haven't paid they are down on you like a ton of bricks

It's been in the news for at least the last week that they would be striking. Guess the OP must have been too busy moaning to notice it being announced on tv and radio.

from the website

26 January 2012
Self Assessment deadline

To make sure our customers are not disadvantaged if they cannot get through to HMRC's call centres on 31 January, we will not impose any late filing penalties for people who file their Self Assessment returns on 1 and 2 February.

The SA deadline remains midnight on 31 January. But HMRC will treat all returns that come in by midnight on 2 February as though they were submitted by 31 January. No customer will have to pay interest on payments due on 31 January that are paid on 1 or 2 February.

Yes, I thought that they £100 fine was only levied where you owed them money. As an individual. where you dont or where they owe you money and youre late, you dont pay.

I'm a contractor so I have to send them either a 'nil' return or a 'deducted' return each month.

Whatever tax I've deducted from sub-contractors I have to then pay each quarter

This fine was because I hadn't informed them before the deadline (19th of the month) that I'd made zero deductions for the previous month.

My own fault - the first I've missed in 16 years.
It just grates a little when one's trying to keep ones self working...

Lee - if I dont pay it, the fine just increases.

That's disgusting. One day late. They were adamant they were going to get something out of you

Write them a very polite letter with an excuse, such as someone is ill and apologise for the mistake, explain its the first time in 16 years and request it be removed this time.

Worth a go.

Not true: if they owe you anything, there is no fine.

My wife was owed £75 and got it back, no fine after three years of appafrently not submitting...turned out it was their silly computer system

Sounds to me that they operate to the same greed ethic as the bankers! Any excuse to do you down for more cash.

Must be the sort of attitude which is generated in those who deal in money!
