Bombardier
Not so long ago there was all that hoo-haa over the Government not awarding them the contract that would save Derby.
I remember people on here deriding Bombardier as a company that makes crap products, not VFM, cost too much, etc....
Well, the Swiss - that nation of pernickety perfectionists have just award them a contract worth over $240 million USD.
At least some Governments know a good company and product when it sees one.
It won't save Derby, of course...
That is all.

I am a contractor for
Bombardier I
Work down in London but
From what I hear it's not all doom and gloom up in Derby they have a about 50 trains to make for electrostar and there is a decision being made this year about the cross rail project which would see derby remain open for a few more years. Real shame they lost out on thameslink contract.

That Electrostar contract is only good for a couple years tops - should finish well before the new contract is dished out unless it's bought forward.
Unless Bombardier get a contract to fill in the gaps, they won't keep Derby open.
Even if they DO win the contract - it may be too late and that the trains are then built in Berlin or Austria.
Andy - what are you a contractor of?

I am a technican commissioning and maintaining the new S-stock trains for the underground. I don't think they would dare give the cross rail contract to anyone else the unions would be in uproar.

Bit ironic, if you recall the contract went to Siemens...who already employ millions of British workers; far more than Bombardier do.
Just as well, because lets just imagine that we upset Siemens and they pulled out of the UK in protest, they'd be alot more unemployed than if we told Bombardier to go and do one.
Although Siemens (along with Serco etc.) are the government's bum-buddy, so I doubt that's going to happen but its all about playing favourites really.
