Bio-diversity over the past 100 years has been massively reduced driven by commercial farming and companies like Monsanto.
Gene pools with low diversity are hugely at risk - biodiversity creates resilience in any ecosystem.

This is the outcome of selective pollination;
One could argue that the past 50 odd years spent cross-pollinating selected sub species has resulted in a more hardy crop. Obviously those in farming would choose the hybrid seeds produced from the selective processes, as they are more likely to obtain the best results.

More hardy to what though?
Evolutionary history informs us that biodiversity is the most successful strategy for life.
Mono-clonal crops are one step away from disaster - even if they may be 'hardy' in the current ecology.

Yep and the madness of GM seeds being sold which grow infertile crops so you have to buy more seed to grow them next time around.
Makes commercial sense but not much other.
There is a crop seed repository buried up in the arctic circle in Norway I think to just in case some bio-Armageddon happens.
