Mr Cancer Operation

Mr Cancer Operation
Hi all
Just thought I would post this up as it might help someone.
I went to skin doctors a few times about a minor allergy and as a casual afterthought on one visit I got them to check my moles.
One turned out to be cancerous and they have just taken a chunk out of the top of my leg.
I am kind of back on my feet now.
Now.
1. This mole was at the back at the top of my leg so I couldnt see it
2. It wasnt causing any problems, but if it had been left for a few more months I would have probably been dead.
3. I am 45, but I am the fit bloke, you know the one that does 50press ups a day still. I climbed an alpine mountain with snowshoes ect 1 week before they found it. My mates are astounded, some of whom smoke ect, And out of all of us I am the one in the pub that that isnīt supposed to happen to.
4. I used to see alot of sun. However in the last 10years I have rarely got a tan and usually have a tshirt on. So just tanned arms and head.
5. This mole was in a place where the sun dont shine...no not my ****
So the point I am making everyone, is even if you dont feel you are at risk. It is worth getting them checked every six months.
Coming up for 46 - I most certainly wouldnt have seen 50 and I was none the wiser for it.
Perhaps I wont see 50. But It looks like I will
Money saved for my track project...now gone on medical expenses
Never mind
Best wishes
Steve

Wow that was a close call so hope it all turns out fine for you as I am sure it will.
At the very least I guess you might have lost a leg and that's just for starters. Always struck me as odd that a minor skin blemish can carry the potential to kill you.

i had mine checked a few months ago cos i`m covered in moles, the doctor asked have they changed, ive got that many i dont know. v glad you caught it in time.
apparently their blood vessels can go very deep and the killer cancers are on parts of your body where that tissue is renewed quickly, e.g skin, lungs etc

Glad they caught it early. It is a very virulent form and you are lucky to be rid of it.
If there is something you discover that you are not sure about, it is important that you get it medically checked as early as possible. It costs nothing and as in this case can be a life saver.

Glad you are sorted and on the mend
Bloke I work with is always having them removed. He was a persistent sunbedder in his younger days though, so he thinks thats why some of his moles are now getting a bit nasty.

Glad everything has worked out well mate.
Often the ones to look out for are the ones that change shape and/or colour, itch a lot, bleed, or have irregularly shaped borders.
Good advice re getting them checked.
Again, glad it all ended happily.

great awarness thread mate
bad it happened, but good you had it looked at and sorted.
skin cancer is the most survivable of all cancers due to early diagnosis, as its visible.

Steve i know what you are going through because im going through the same thing.
Just before xmas i went to the Doctors for an ear infection, my Mrs said to me to get him to have a look at the mole on my lower back(she has been nagging me for a while to have it checked out)
The Doctor said he was glad i showed him and said it looked like a Melanoma so fast tracked me through for a hospital appointment. They removed it there and then along with 10cm by 2.5cm of surrounding flesh.
I saw the consulant just after xmas who confirmed it as a Melanoma, he also mentioned the condition was worse than breast cancer but lucky for me it was still under 1mm thick. They said its still early to say what will happen in the long term.
I have since been back for them to cut out more surrounding flesh and have to go back to hospital every 2 months for a year for a check ups.
As you said it makes you aware of you own mortality mate.

I'm with you on this one. My girlfriend found a small mole on my lower back 4 years ago. She pestered me to have it looked at and it was a malignant melanoma. Lucky for me it was caught early. I had a big chunk of skin taken from my back, and fortunately no further signs of malignant melanoma. I received the all clear last year.
My girlfriend is now my wife!!

Glad you got it sorted !
I went a couple of months back with a bit of a lump on my shoulder that was a bit funny looking, turned out to be nothing but best to get it checked, and dont forget your nads either.

Glad your Ok Steve, my wife had 4 ops last year due to bcc cancer in her ear, got the all clear in October. She puts it down to sun beds when she was younger, as she is very fair skinned.

Thank you for rescuing the thread from a decent into ****
Seriously. The last ten years I have been not perfect but good when it comes to being sensible in the sun. But before that I was outside alot and I am also fair skinned as well. So like your wife more at risk but just didnt realise it at the time.
Really glad for you she got through it all
