Swiss Coach Crash
Horrific, those poor kids and parents, some of which weren't even sure if their kids had survived this morning. Condolences
Looking at the pictures that wall was an accident waiting to happen.

Sweet jesus - did it hit that jutting out wall pretty much head on?
I did wonder how on earth so many were killed - looking at that photo I can see why!
You'd have thought they would have tapered it in a bit or something.
So, so tragic for everyone involved

thats first pic ive seen of the wall, and wow!!,
a barrier shouldve been there, or a taper in the wall at time of construction.
imo these countries with so many tunnels, and mountainous regions, are just reacting to incidents as they happen- rather than pre-empting them and putting in prevention measures.
you can understand when money is tight, that programmes to address such issues maybe expensive and possibly unpopular - but its only ever going to come back and bite some-one at sometime.
my friends are ski instructors in french alps, and they tell me RTC's are attended to, cleaned up and removed ASAP. and reporting on them miniscule so as not impact on the areas tourism.
theres a balance however - here we moan about over-stringent controls, constant surveilence, H&S ect.
these countries are behind us in such control, but were past the point of neccessity.
sorry off topic there.
really bad incedent there, that on face of it looks like it could have been easily avoided

Its not like I even made a joke directly about kids dying. Therefore, I dont care if you dont find it even slightly funny.

it was a safety slip ramp, I guess where you go when you are having trouble with the vehicle, or brake failure. The end of it (in green) does need a redesign though, as it is not angled enough, and turned into a wall for the bus

Utterly tragic, worst nightmare.
Thats does look a daft design, like the tunnel in which Princess Diana died which had loads of pillars, I think had it been a full wall the car would have glanced off and not stopped dead, thats the problem, the abrupt stop.
A chap at work said his sister had three kids (her triplets) on the British one that crashed a few weeks ago that killed their teacher, she had a bit of a frantic night finding out they were ok.
I think coach travel is generally very safe due to the size and lower speeds but if it does go wrong it can be so devastating. I always get a bit concerned when I send mine off on a coach anywhere, or a school minibus, my brother in law as a boy was in a mini bus crash and was thrown from it and had horrendous, life threatening injuries that still affect him now.

I reckon that the driver either went to sleep (as is SO common in these coach accidents) OR he lost conciousness for another reason.
However there were TWO drivers onboard, it was only 9pm in the evening, and they werent that far into their journey..... it's been reported that the coach slid along the tunnel wall for some considerable distance before hitting the wall at high speed, I reckon if asleep he would have woken up once hitting the wall....
Its a mystery all right... but still a daft design IMHO
