Default Are there too many forums on Scoobynet???

With all the threads flying around about Scoobynet dying of death, is it not time we did sommat. Of course the world moves on and things change but i'm sure there are many like myself who are quite happy to hang around on Scoobynet. It's a simple fact that it's way quieter round here than it used to be yet we have in excess of 70 forums/ sub-forums, many of which are hardly ever used.
I personally only really go in:
SN General
NSR
Other Marques
Gen Tech
Computers.
I may pop into others but only if i'm bored. I'm sure i'm not the only one who browses a few of the 70 odd. I'm damn sure that there are a good few threads in the other forums i don't look in but i simply can't be arsed opening those forums - lets face it, SN isn't the fastest place in the world . Is it not possible to trim things down a bit and probably re-arrange the forums. For instance, the computer section sees a good few threads but it's way down there where many people don't bother with - lets bring it North.
Looking at the place from a Newbies point of view - what a frigging nightmare to negotiate. I joined a forum to ask a question and that place seemed daunting to me with only 30 odd forums.
What do we think people??

I'm inclined to agree to be honest. But I can almost guarantee for every person that does agree, someone will be along to say things should stay as they are and like things to be broken down into the sub-forums.

The poll is a good idea to get an idea of where people stand, but again, people will either not see it or they'll look and not bother voting/more importantly commenting, and then if things don't go their way, we get back to the complaining part.

I do support the idea of moving the computer section up the main forum list, as it is quite popular and maybe is a bit pushed out of the way down the bottom.

Maybe you can talk to the powers that be and we can start an official Sticky Poll. Lets involve the whole community and get their opinion. This place may never be as big as it was due to the Impreza being too expensive to run in this day and age but i'm damn sure we can make it a lot better for all the current members who have no intention of leaving regardless of what they drive and of course for the new members who are yet to drive

Since you asked so nicely, I will pass on the idea.

I can't promise anything, but I will put this thread forward.

IIRC there was some stupid reason/agreement that prevented SN from having forums deleted. My memory has faded on the exact reason, but I do recall being told no.

Royal pain in the **** IMO. As the tech section wants a tidy up.

And my scroll wheel is wearing out too

We don't have to delete them - just hide them where no-one can see them

I think thats what happened with the old sales sections (or renamed).

You should see the list of old hidden forums....its huge! Makes moving threads a nightmare as the drop-down list box is massive. All sorts of stuff in there...the blog sections from the prodrive bunch, SDB's tech articles fourums, the super hutch, etc.

I agree - I only EVER look in NSR these days - I don't have the time or inclination to search out sub forums.

IMHO all the 'Off Topic' sub forums :

Computers
DIY
Photography
Sport
Bikers

Should ALL be merged into NSR - it will liven up the forum and keep the pages moving.

Back in the day I had some very good IT issuses answered swiftly which helped me enormously at work, lets face it Scoobynet WAS just I.T Geeks - merge them all..... now!

I only use the new posts button

I pretty much lurk through all the thread titles that interest me. Doesn't matter what sub forum it's under.

Yes. As the forum is in its twilight years the amount of traffic doesn't warrant having so many forums. I certainly go into the other ones (and never Scooby-related anymore) but only when I want something that is related. Which means that I don't go there to possibly answer posts (DIY is a good example of this).

Hmmm, I think computing is too busy to warrant binning and bit to geeky for NSR? Reminds me of the old days when a IT geek starts off on the pros of cons of Commodore vs Atari other people would laugh and point. The same today happens with Apple vs PC, Apple vs Android, Apple vs Samsung, Apple vs Microsoft.

Similar issue applies for geeky stuff on sports and bikes.

So I think Computing should be opened up more...called Geeks, or Technology (Geeks and Technology? ). That way in-depth serious techy stuff stays there and keeps NSR for the more banterous stuff/discussion.

Photography.....could it be merged with Member's Gallery? (or a child forum of it)

All sports sections are dead. So how about merging them all?

DIY is dead - bin?

Bikers - merge with Other Marques (or child forum of it)?

Muppet is dead - bin? Fight club is the new muppets these days IMO.

ICE and security - both dead...merge it with lighting and rename it Electronics and Electrical.

TOB, SSO, Scoobylive. All dead. Merge into 'events and trackdays'.

Styling renamed to Exterior

Suspension merged with 'wheel tyres and brakes' and renamed to suit.

And finally I think some thought needs to be given to general tech and drivetrain as both contain topics on the same/overlapping subjects (i.e clutch threads in general tech).

No promises. But the more feedback we get the better the chances of getting things changed.

I personally think it's probably too late to start shutting stable doors, but here's my two pence anyway;

Do we really need 15 seperate For Sale forums?

Is there really enough traffic to just all the individual Regional, Club and events forums?

Plus, what Ali said

Sports and Bikers both used to be really active, then they got shoved to the bottom under all the SdB generated pay-per-view forums and everyone left. Great move
Bring them back up the board, and just maybe, people might start bothering to use them again

I don't even own a Subaru anymore, I only visit NSR and occasionally Bikers these days, often just checking in to see if any of those who made it worth visiting have returned

Lol click "livefeed" on the orange bar at the top of the page! New posts appear automatically without you having to click "new posts" ...

General Subaru chat,

Technical chat,

Non scooby related,

For sale.

It got to a point where i noticed mods moving threads for ridiculous reasoning. If the majority was in one thread (non scooby) it would most likely be like it used to. When nothing was moved and non scooby was more like a free for all sarcasm pit with some friendly advice at the same time.

Oh and bring back infractions.

It's still the case where people just post their threads in NSR just so people read it.

Personally I would:
  • Put "Suspension" with "wheels, tyres & brakes" and possibly even "drive train" in there too.
  • Put "ICE", "Security" and "Lighting and other electrical" together and possibly even "Interior" in there with them.
  • Tidy up the entire "For Sale" section. i.e. Are there any sections that can be merged?
  • Leave "Sport" and "Motor Sport" seperate but definitely get rid of the "Rallying" sub forum and just leave it with Motor Sport.
  • "Regional" and "Events" I just leave collapsed and don't look at them anyway so not really bothered what happens to those.
  • I like the seperate clubs section. If your not interested, just click the expand/collapse button the right hand side and they will not be seen anymore.
  • Move Computing up in to the Community section and possibly rename it to something that would cover: phones, TV, Hi-Fi and I.T. etc.

I would leave the rest as it is.

Almost every forum I see now has a ridiculous number of sub forums, at least half of which have hardly any use. I have no idea what posses people to create so many when they have no traffic.
