Neither is the march 2006 clause.
I have a range rover sport as does a neighbour. Mine is a 2008 and his a early 2006, I pay 475 tax he pays 200 and something.
Cars are identical so to me that is a complete pish take
Nik.

Selling my Blackbird at the moment (just because I'm taking on my Dad's old Triumph Tiger) and it never ceases to make me laugh at the performance v costs.
180mph bike, 1100cc motor, 10 second quarter mile if you want it and a ton up faster than almost everything else on the road can hit sixty yet insurance £240 for the year tax £80 and it only cost me £20 to get the MOT done. Oh and 40+ mpg. Brilliant!

Well stands to reason the thing doesn't travel at top whack every where. Who does? However, I commute on it, I've done 20,000 miles in the last couple of years and it's a mix of motorway and city traffic with the occasional blast. The bike gets between 160 and 170 miles before the fuel light comes on and works out to 40mpg. It's amazingly accurate. Doesn't seem to matter that much how it is ridden. Never had less from it!

Motorbikes may cost less but what a hassle. By the original posters maths, savings really arent that much to shout about, but the risk of crashing, soaked in the rain is. My MG ZR tax = £127 p/y, 45mpg+, nippy, 4 people in it, dry + safe.
Everyone wants a bike / scooter in the summer, but lets be honest, our summers are wet. So, get ready to take ages to put on your water proofs, get ready to constantly be aware that car drivers never see you, get ready for the first rain after a long period of dry for the slippy roads, get ready for the time WHEN YOU WILL CRASH.
Also, its hard to live with just a motorbike. So, you then tend to have a car for other journeys when you need to carry things, or long distances etc etc. So, now that money saving device has cost you twice.
Personally, I value my legs, and body functions. However, let me know your local hospital, and I'll let them know another organ donor is preparing his parts. :-)
Sometimes you just cant put a price on safety.

And besides that, it's got a full luggage system on it. I can load it up for a two week holiday and not worry. I've done Stelvio Pass, The TT course and been to the Nurburgring three times, seen 160mph on the autobahn and ridden the bike there and back, no fuss.
I have heated gloves and decent kit so unless it is snowing or very icy no the weather doesn't bother me on account of me not being a complete wuss.
I think you and SBK need to wrap yourselves in bubble wrap and hide in a corner, going outside can be dangerous you know

A cheap 125 might be as above but I rode sports bikes for 15+ years and it's one of the most expensive times i've had. Maintenance wise they cost a bomb - £150-£200 for a back tyre that last 2k-4k miles with the front not being much cheaper that's a lot when you are doing 20k a year all year round. Chain and sprockets aren't cheap either for decent ones. The wet weather gear cost be the best part of £600 alone.
Great fun and I loved my bikes but after 15 years and huge amounts of luck with near misses my kids came first and bikes are gone for me no matter how much I miss my R1. Bikes aren't as cheap as people think, the running costs of the Rover 214 I bought were far cheaper than the bike.

I had an RD350 that I came of twice after sliding down the road on my hands and knees a second time enough was enough) although recently I've had the urge to have another go.
That was up until last year when a few of the traffic police who are customers here told me never to let my kids have a moped etc as that week combined they had to tell 3 different sets of parents their children were dead.
Simply put their is a minority of car drivers who are totally oblivious/don't give a s**t about any other road user!
They will pull out on you expecting you to stop or better still not even be able to spot a bike coming towards them as there brain is simply not looking for bikes!
If you get one I hope you don't bump into one of these t**ts!

Trouble is, the government spank the motorist and it forces people out of smaller cars even, onto push bikes and motorbikes to save money, makes me wonder how many accidents happen that involve vast expense for the NHS because someone fell off a Moped and got a bit smashed up where a small car would have protected them, also for families they end up buying smaller, cheaper to run cars to cart four people around and ok cars have got safer but four people in a crash, in a Ford Ka versus a Mondeo ?
I ride a pushbike, it saves a few quid on petrol but I get some exercise as well.

I've just started riding to work on my brothers lent pushbike. Was horrible the first couple of days and had jelly legs but that was just crap fitness levels. I live two miles from work and have somewhere safe and dry to store it - no brainer when you think I'd have to drive a long route home to get some heat into the Subaru's engine.
Quick turnaround today from 2-10/6-2 tomorrow but it's 10 minutes on the bike and I'll sleep well if it's windy
Feel better for it too and has cost me the grand total of...
Nicking a high viz from work
£8.99 on some Argos value range lights

When the Subaru was off the road before borrowing my brothers bike I was walking, but getting soaked on a 6-2 isn't pleasureable.
Plus I work at the local steelworks which is quite a physically demanding job - I don't sit on my **** in front of a computer on a cushty 9-5 like most on here
