Hi-fi for an 8x8ft room.
Hi,
I want a hi-fi for an 8x8ft room. Being a bit of a traditionalist, i'm thinking of an amp, cd player and a pair of speakers. I'm willing to pay up to 1k for the right system, but don't want something that will dominate the room. The speakers will be wall mounted (probably).
Any advice. From my days of buying hi-fi in the past, all i can remember is Cyrus making smaller size separates, then get a pair of smallish speakers.

I'd consider this equipment.
Marantz PM6004
http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ara-pm6004-blk
Cambridge NP-30
http://www.richersounds.com/product/.../camb-np30-blk
Dali Zensor 1
http://www.richersounds.com/product/...r-1-blkhttp://
It would be a fantastic sounding setup and could sound even better with a few more quid spent on speakers.
I love Monitor Audio speakers and would check out the BX-range also but they can be a tad bright for some ears.

I'm really not after full size separates. I di look at the Arcam mini-solo today, but wasn't impressed by the sound. It could have been the fact they only had one (crap) CD in store though.

I don't rate the arcam solo-mini at all to be honest. Can't really think of any smaller systems that i've actually liked other than the DM38 but it isn't quite up to the standard you are looking for.

Over budget but the Naim uniti is brilliant for a one box package, does everything you would need it to do, sounds amazing into some spendor's or some B&W's if you want a tad more excitment.

Just wondering if cd playback is a neccessity? From my time working in a hifi shop, I wasnt impressed by the cyrus kit, far too bright and thin sounding for my taste.

If the you would rather not stretch to the Naim ( uniti qute doesnt have the cd player but everything else), I would recommend Audiolab/B&W combo, cheaper still is the Rotel/B&W combo with B&W 685 speakers if you want standmounts or even cheaper would be the Marantz/ B&W combo, out of them the choice for me would Audiolab then Rotel, but the Rotel combo will be very good for something that doesnt bankrupt you.

I must admit, naim /neat is good for detail, beat and balance, my every day system. At the moment I still run a Ion obelisk, royd system, far more bass and a more dynamic presentation, not quite the rhythm, but you need a BIG room.

For me though, if I ever won the lottery it would be Pmc/Bryston, amazing!

Personally I don't like the Cyrus sound and am not overly impressed by the Bryston/PMC sound either.
If I were you and spending £1000 firstly I would be looking second hand. Loads of bargains to be had with kit less than a year old going at 50% of rrp.
Secondly I'd spend a large chunk of that budget on the speakers. The old saying of source first is now outdated. At the money you are talking about most CD players/streamers will sound similar but there could potentially be a vast difference between speakers that cost £250 and those that cost £750.
Which speakers would suit your room size, shape and your musical tastes nobody can know apart from you. So I would go and listen to different kinds of speakers with your kind of music.
The biggest lesson I've learned after years of 'wasting' loads of money on audio is that in this day and age of digital audio your speakers are the single biggest determinant of sound quality.

As somebody else said though you'll have to be careful with your speaker choice in a room that small otherwise you'll get bass 'boom'
Do you just want background music whilst you play on the computer or is it a room you want to actually sit down in with a glass of something and really listen to the music?

Anyway, i'm off to have a listen to some today. B&W 686 are small and Sevenoaks sell them.
