How to reduce pain from an old scar?
About 10 years ago I sliced my thumb open on a knife. The wound was from the pad of my thumb along the bottom to near the first joint. It bled heavily and was painful for a few days.
However recently I have been getting a lot of pain from the scar area. By a lot I mean its really hard to hold a screwdriver in my hand because of the level of pain. Since this is something I have to do for my job, that's an issue.
I'm self employed so I could do with some solution...

The black area is where the cut was, a sort of y shape.
The yellow area is where the pain is.
Not much to see!! Not much at all...

OK, appointment with doctors and then if they are no help its tabasco sauce and hot water. I just have to try that to see if it will work. After that its Tiger Balm, I've already had a chat with a mate who used to see it, but unfortunately is currently out of stock.
I have to do something, it even hurts to pick up a pint glass....and that is no good!

Why won't you see your doctor about it. Doesn't cost anything and you never know, he might even be able to find a remedy. Isn't that what he is paid for?
I have an excellent GP and he has helped me very positively in the past.

You must have misread Leslie, I am going to see a doc about it. If they are useless then its down to the other options. Although Tobasco sauce is going to be tried before the appointment comes up. Just have to see if that will work.

Yes tarmac terror.
Luminous, consider reading and completing this first:

Don't overwhelm your poor GP with pages of it, but it may help you to summarise what might be a complex pain in the few minutes they have available.

scar tissue can become painful, esp on such an often used part of te body
docs first, and assess there guidance.
painkillers tend to just mask the problem rather than address, some interesting recommendations on this thread though.
scar tissue aften needs broken down over time.
never been painfull before.
imo ageing takes it toll on things. not saying your an oldie but as part of natural degredation its quite likely damaged parts of tissue can become the first parts to give problems.
if no-ones else's recommendations work just lob it off, opposable thumbs, who needs em

I'd stick to Sociology mate, you have no idea what you are talking about.
The OP has not given anywhere near enough information to make a firm diagnoses let alone treatment options.
Just because you've had 'tons of injuries doesn't mean 'you know' squat diddly
I've been on an aeroplane tons of times doesn't mean I can fly a plane.

Funny how you zero in on my posts when posts above have just said 'use Tiger balm'.
Anyway my post followed on from Jeff who specifically was talking about scar tissue.
