Vodka
I have started drinking Vodka for the first time in my life as a change and to try and avoid some of the calories from Beer whilst still getting some alcohol in my system.
Bought a bottle of Absolut, just the standard 40 percent stuff and with a bit of Tonic it is a nice drink, ran out of Tonic and bunged some in some of the kids diet Cherryade and scarily it just tasted of Cherryade, couldn't taste the alcohol to any degree (didnt put masses in).
Absolut seems fairly expensive as Vodka's go, mid range brand but is Vodka like Whisky where cheap blend is generally pretty unpleasant and it only gets interesting with Malts or like brandy where cheap stuff tastes crap, Remy Martin is what I started with and I like that, Martell or any shop own brand is generally crap.
So, is it the same with Vodka, I was thinking Vodka has less margin for taste differences as it is basically just alcohol and water without any flavoring, kind of like a no nonsense alcohol delivery system for humans so we don't kill ourselves with some kind of Meths type stuff at 96.75 percent pure alcohol like Meths, the branding just that without much variation in the actual product or can you tell big differences between them ? the poseurs at work make a big point of getting either a Grey Goose or Bombay Sapphire Gin bottle into any given photo and make a fuss about how smooth it is when they are just dressing up getting mullered into a way of displaying some aspirational lifestyle products, or is it better ?
Can you tell the difference between own brand cheapy stuff and top end Vodka ?

Very nice but about as calorietastic as beer
Had some Bison Grass vodka that my brother had, that was nice enough. Absolut is good when frozen, drink it neat from a chilled shot glass, love the way it goes gloopy in the freezer but doesn't actually freeze.

Smirnoff red is paint stripper , absolut is still a cheap Vodka but not too bad, Russian standard is excellent IMO but only really appreciate it when it's drunk straight and frozen. Nothing wrong with the expensive brands but with grey goose and belvedere 30 quid in the shops and 200 plus In a club I fail to see any justification for the price hike, to drink at home probably worth it if the shop does not stock Russian standard.

To answer your question, in my opinion, yes.
I've tried so many different types of vodka and I can not only notice a difference in taste, but the affects and hangover afterwards. Take a cheapy small bottle of Tesco Imperial for £6; it tastes like paint stripper and the hangover is terrible (if you drink a lot). Compare this to Smirnoff or Absolut, and these 2 vodkas are much more drinkable in my opinion and most of the times I will take up feeling fine.
The Absolut Raspberry vodka with cold lemonade is one of my favourites
If you want a really dirty vodka, then buy Glen's vodka (can get from ASDA) -I swear it's just made in a basement!

I see a taste test coming up, like the Stella vs Peroni Challenge where I rated Peroni ever so slightly ahead of Stella, i.e. not enough to expalin away the price difference.
So, will get a nice bottle of Top End Stuff and some newsagent half bottle five quid turps and
see how I get on.

dont forget the miniture umbrella
Should have added, Diet Cherryade, Sainsbury's 59p, tasted pretty good actually, tasted more of Almond/Bakewell type Cherry than the traditional stuff which once the nostalgia has work off is pretty horrid.

Being a big Vodka drinker for many years, I can state categorically that it does not have any side effects and accusations of talking ****e, looking ****e and dribbling are unfounded
However in terms of purity and what you get for your money, it really does only being an issue on what you are mixing it with, if at all.
The Russian pure vodkas, distilled and ones like Grey Goose, drunk on their own or with ice really are nice. Absolut is a great one to drink neat.
If you are mixing and I like to, TBH you could be drinking some **** from the local Lidl and you wont even notice. The mixer takes away any vodka taste and you are essentially just getting pissed ....have fun

Make a squash with water from any flavour squash you like and lob vodka in that. Makes a nice refreshing tall drink that gets you mashed. Nice.
I used to drink vodka with Coke, but squash works very well too.

If you intend to drink it with a mixer, any vodka will do.
Or drink a good quality vodka straight from the freezer, no mixer.
I keep a bottle of Belvedere in the freezer.
TOP TIP: A half bottle of Glen's vodka in my windscreen washer bottle is far better than any screen wash. It smells nice, and doesn't freeze in winter.

Agreed with the consensus of if being mixed, any Vodka will do.
Try some Krupnik and keep it in the freezer. Now thats drinking Vodka.

Milk thistle and elderflower flavouring makes this stuff drinkable straight (and I am no vodka fan!)
Lovely stuff
PS Not cheap

I am a placid laid back individual, I neither have the build nor the aggression to threaten anyone. However, drop half a dozen shots of vodka, I become argumentative, keep drinking beyond this point I will offer to fight with anyone I don't like the look of. In the past this has included door staff, police officers and one occasion a minister of religion. I have no idea why it does this, but I refuse to touch the stuff.
I have snorted neat vodka from an upturned pint glass and off a spoon - I don't recommend it, it was quite an experience.

I had a bottle of Zubrowka recently. Nice, but I couldn't tell much difference, unless you drink it neat. Having said that, it has been ages since I drank Smirnoff.
I have a few bottles of Ciroc lying around, which is my standard Vodka.
Taste wise, as I love Bloody Marys, the mix of other ingredients is more important to me, as so easy to get it wrong.
I do want more Zubrowka, as it is a good talking point with guests as I am mixing up some Bloody Marys, but I should really try the Grey Goose, amongst others, that other Vodka drinkers I know like.
Definitely feeling thirsty now!
Enjoy either way!
