Hi, I'm new on the forum and also in the country, I'm Argentinian and after live for 5 years in US, we (me and my wife) decided to move to UK.
Actually we are renting a small apartment in the London Tooting area but we doesn't like it, and also we'd like to find a house and that's quite impossible in the London area.
I'm a mechanic so I preffer to found a small house with a big garage than a great house without garage.
What do you think, wich would be the best area to live, actually we don't have a job so we preffer to start looking for a nice place to live and then start looking for a good job.
All opinions are welcome, we don't have a preffered place, so maybe your inputs would save us time and money!
Thank you in advance!
Cheers!
Hernan

Ignore the idiots, and welcome.
Avoid london and surrounding areas, bloody awful part of the world and difficult to make friends, everyone is on the make.
You want somewhere close to a decent sized town/city so work is not too hard to find.
I have travelled with work all over the uk and the only other places i would live other than where i'm from which is Nottingham, are bristol area and wales nice people and places with a decent population so work not too difficult to find for a good mechanic.
Somewhere like where my house is in Arnold Nottingham, 4 miles from the city centre but a town in it's own right, with good facilities, supermarkets, parks and 10 mins up the road sherwood forest or 40 mins and your in the derbyshire peak district, good sized houses to rent or buy and not silly prices like london and the south east, which is over crowded and over rated.
The city it's self has everything you could want or need and the people are friendly.
Good luck.

You'll struggle to find a decent property without first having a job as most landlords offering decent properties exclude those on benefits.
Avoid London and the surrounding areas, as you'll be able to get a much larger property for the same money the further out you go. I rent and work in Dorset, lovely part of the country and work is easy to come by.

Hi and we do have sunshine sometimes ![Smile](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I am sure you know that house prices vary enormously across the UK. London being by far the most expensive and the cheaper houses are in the shabby areas. Tooting is pretty grim.
I really only know the south of the UK and the further West you go the cheaper it is. But you need to be careful about rules and regulations about running a business from home if you are intending to use your garage as a repair service.
Finding a mechanic's job shouldn't be too tough but pay is not fantastic in the typical town garage. Your wife might find it hard to get work unless she specialises in something.
If you have kids I feel that schooling outside London is better.
If you can find a good Estate Agent that works nationally then they should be able to give good advice. Plenty of websites that can give you house prices in any area you select.
I am sure others will comment on Midlands and North of UK.
david
Edit to add. The Bristol area wouldn't be a bad choice as great road access to some lovely parts of the country and quite a busy place (and lots of pretty students!).

If I were suspicious I'd raise the:
1. First post ever in SNet goes into NSR
2. He's basically saying he's an immigrant
3. He's also saying he has no job - but intends to get one
Could this be a troll seeking to out immigrant haters? maybe/maybe not but there are some sad ******* on here

I lived 5 years in south florida and I really loved it, when I arrived there I was just a simply mechanic, after two years I was working for a Porsche dealer and learned more than I learned in my whole life.
I know that some haters could show up, it always happen, and if they are ok doing this go ahead, I'm not expecting to receive the best wishes ever.
But I really appreciate really helpful posts like Ditchmister and David Lock left in this thread.
Don't worry about me, I'm just seeking for help and as a Subaru fan and owner I'd like to share more with the SNet members than places to live and work.

Thank you everyone for the info, it was really helpful.
I'm not looking for any kind of problem, I'd like to find a nice place to live in UK.
BTW, If you go to Argentina nobody is going to complain about the Isles, nobody cares about this at this point.
Most of Argentinians only care and remember the lifes that where lost.

No worries your welcome, this place is full of idiots that think they are funny and smart, but there are also some very decent people on here, so don't be put off by the resident trolls/cynics.![Thumb](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif)
I'd go on a few weekend trips if i were you, and get a feel for the areas your interested in, all have good and bad points, just depends what kind of life style you like to live, as in outdoors adventure type stuff or full on city living.

Welcome to SNet and welcome to this country. If you plan to work here, I suggest you also take a look at this site for information regarding working in the UK: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/vi...ation/working/
Good luck.

+ stating he's renting a flat in Tooting, but location under username is listed as Madrid.
+ voluntarily moving from one of the warmest and most sought-after areas of the US, where he had a senior, very well-paid job for his field, to a country that has among the shytest weather in the entire developed world, where he has no job at all as yet.
If he's not a troll, he needs professional help.
