Default DVD + Video recorder

The trusty old dvd/ video combi has finally died so it's time to get into the modern age.
Can anyone recommend a dvd player that can also record from the tv so we dont have to use vhs tapes anymore?
Nothing too hi-tech as it's just for taping the soaps, etc to watch later (when i'm out) and pref with a built in dvd player to watch the dvd collection

Thanks

not a wind up honest - the vhs is kaput on the box we have and i thought you could buy recorders that have a hard drive instead of recording onto a vhs tape?
Having a built in dvd player would be great but i guess not essential

so i'm living in the 80s - not up with the latest techie things, have heard about tivo but that's £5 a month which seems a waste of money?
