What is this country coming to? A knighthood for riding a bike? Discuss...

It dissapoints many people that someone can get a knighthood for services to their country riding a push bike, but real heroes who serve us in a meaningful way, like soldiers and nurses cannot.

I haven't personally heard any "Anti Bradley" feeling, only anti knighthood.

I think the £1.5m a year salary should more than make up for his knighthood.

And none of that takes anything away from Wiggins himself who is obviosuly a very fine athlete!

Chris Hoy received one for riding a bike so why not Bradley?
However i do feel they are handed out too easy these day's and riding a bike maybe not worthy of such an honour.
Nik.
p.s. I am a keen cyclist and in no way anti Wiggins.

Exactly this - it's too soon IMHO. That he should have one at the end of his career is absolutely deserved.
What has happened is a massive achievement - the whole of the TdF is a team event - the domestiques are there simply to get their man to jersey (whichever colour). The fact that Sky had the best team by a country mile simply meant they dominated the race and made history.
Watching the yellow jersey leading out sprint finishes was just amazing - EVERY team member played their part and did it better then anyone else

Olympic Gold too then yes, might as well i suppose, makes little difference to me.
I was watching the golf yesterday and they had Nick Faldo giving his 2p's worth, and i thought to myself Sir Nick Faldo? For playing golf? Dunno, feels that they should have a separate honour for sports achievements.

I would much rather that knighthoods and such like, go to people who have achieved something in the medical or science world- for things that are likely to have a beneficial effect and make a real difference to the human race as a whole.
This cyclist chap will just bring in a extra few quid for the cycle industry! (perhaps they could sponsor his "knighthood"!)

I think he should get one for the speech he gave ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
On the Champ Elysees after winning one of the greatest sporting achievements going, in front of millions, making history and confirming GB as the cycling nation he says "We'll be drawing the raffle in a minute"
Farking genius.

I wonder if the same feeling would still apply if Andy Murray had won Wimbledon and awarded a knighthood.
Winning the TDF has been a massive achievement, especially for a Brit.

Bruce Forsyth for example, it took him about seventy years of entertaining to get his.

I did the Notts Bike Ride a week last Sunday - 102 miles (112 on the day) , great fun, very very tiring but getting the imperial ton under your belt is always something good to do.

Couldn't agree more, well said.
I think the £1.5m a year salary should more than make up for his knighthood.
Never realised how contrived the sport is until last night when the whole Team Sky thing was explained. So they have a massive budget way in excess of any other team and attack the tour as a complete team event deciding in advance who should win..... how 'sporting' is that? Not sure about it really.
And none of that takes anything away from Wiggins himself who is obviosuly a very fine athlete!

however having sky as the sponsor means little imo, its quite a thought out strategy that takes the win, and they all play the game. each team memeber knows his role.
and EPO and blood "doctoring" never ever come into any teams strategy btw!!! the punishments are so severe??? it would put anyone off

still cant tarnish them all, ect. he did the hard work, so well done imo.
