In simple terms detox.

Time of the year when we don't eat during daylight hours, give more money to charity, put down the bombs and generally try to be better people. A month of reflecting on your behaviour, attitude, life and making bonds with the family.

Why only for a month? why not be better people all the time?

This seems just like a temporary ceasefire before normal service resumes.
So does this mean that nothing is going to happen during the olympics then as you are all busy reflecting on your behaviour?

Okay i'll put it in simple terms.

Over the year things happen, ones morality can wonder, ethics lower. The month of Ramadan is not a ceasefire. It is a time to better yourself and then carry our betterment on.

My favourite part is the family union. I know it sounds silly but i like having a meal with my wife and kid. Ramadan is the only time we get to have a meal together everyday. Normally i am late from work, she is early and so on so forth. Plus we are encouraged to rebuild family ties which may have broken over the year and so on so forth.

as a non-religous person with limitied exposure, especially to little discussed religions its good to hear the actual reasoning behind this. as an "outsider i just couldnt fathom the reasoning for such behaviour but having had some explain the reasons, i can understand why some may find it useful or feel an obligation towards such behaviour.

in the bodybuilding community were often asked about limiting catabolic effects of temporary starvation induced from ramadam periods - its extremly difficult in practical terms but by and large is accepted and advice is given to help those with such interests.

ive personally helped a few people who follow this practcie and as much as i dont beleive or follow any religion or its practices and would never let impact my life, i can understand why or even just the rigedness to which its followed and aid from there - without belittleing or ridiculing others un-harmful behaviour.

tbh i respect its discipline that it makes followers behave, that takes a form of dedication imo
