Trying To Buy a New Sat Nav ...
I have a very old TomTom and am looking to replace it.
Have looked at the Garmin offerings (with Lifetime free updates) at £99 ... looks a good deal.
However, I am used to my TomTom and it does all I ask of it - so favour another TomTom.
Now, the 'feature' I use most is the FAVOURITES Feature where I have inputted all my regular places and can input a Hotel or Campsite so I can return easily back to the place.
The Garmin states that it retains the last 50 journeys - but no mention of Favourites - does anyone know if it has any such feature?
Also, the TomTom XXL - does this retain the Favourites feature? I can find no reference to it.
The more I look the more I realise what a good product my old TomTom is ... many features have been lost (so it seems) on the new versions.

I just enquired to see how much it would cost to update my 7 year old Tomtom with current maps - £75!
Think I will start using my smart phone instead!

As someone who doesn't own a smartphone, but who does need a new satnav, can someone answer me this?
My understanding is that a smartphone satnav uses Google Maps to navigate (or similar) and that they are downloaded as needed. If this is so, what happens when you are in the middle of nowhere with no 3G or even any mobile signal? I know it has a GPS sensor, so it knows where it is, but how would it get the maps?
Is this totally wide of the mark?
Geezer

OK, so if I had driven to somewhere without using my satnav, and it had no signal, then I decided to go somewhere that needed the satnav, would I be buggered?
I realise that in reality, you have to be a bit sensible and plan things, but with a 'proper' satnav, you wouldn't have to worry.

Yep, phone will always know where you are from the GPS, but may not load the map if you load up the "maps" app in the middle of no where.
It'll be like giving someone the co-ordinates of where they are, but without a map to relate to!
Scott.

Pete, maybe you have a superfluous 'u' in your spelling of favorites.
The American Manual has a whole section dedicated to favorites, I don't suppose the British version would be different.

The maps are downloaded as part of the installation and stored on the phone so no worries about not having them.
£19 for UK only or £30 for all Europe so not bad.

TomTom are also supposed to be bringing out an Android app.

Tom Tom is the best i personally think, ive got the Live 900, but updates are a rip off.
I have the Lumia 900 with Navteq which is Garmin, which is ok. I also have the Iphone free one
In the scooby ive got the pioneer 930Bt which is ok
But the tom tom in my opinion still own the market, just always right never take u down stupid roads and just work.

This already used to be possible with the 'brutus' mod on rooted or non-branded devices, but it's now officially supported by the google app.
Works great too if you don't have unlimited data on your phone package, and you want to download maps in advance over wifi.
