Proud of the Olympics?
When we were awarded the games in 2005, and after the cheesy and embarrasing handover in 2008, I was very doubtful about our ability to host a decent games, it would be over budget and a bit naff to be honest.
Allied to that, the dreadful UK weather would just add to the misery.
I am glad to admit that I was totally wrong. This is the best Olypmics I have seen, for all sorts of reasons, and it has instilled a real feeling of pride for me for what LOCOG and the UK in general have delievered, not to mention the outstanding success of our Olympians.
So, what does the Scoobynet massif think, agree or disagree? The Olympics have got 71% approval from the UK public, will you reflect that?
Geezer

I think the whole two weeks has been absolutely stunning....
The venues all looked superb & top class. Hopefully they'll all keep going for the sportsmen of the future.
Hopefully the UK masses can lose some of their cynicism, instead of saying everything's gonna be ****, we can say we *are* very good at things!
(except TDW of course, who's blatant cynical Olympic trolling is beyond tiresome)

I cant say that i have watched much of it, yet I'm amazed how it does seem to have sparked an interest with most of the country.
But 9bn - ouch that a serious lot of money that could of been used elsewhere.

I remember standing in Trafalgar Square on July 6th 2005, when it was announced that we'd won the bid.
I have commuted through Stratford and watched the Olympic Park rise from the wasteland.
I ALWAYS thought we'd do this well, but even with my misty-eyed optimism and belief, I am stunned at the sheer brilliance of these Games.
Having looked forward to this event so much over the past 7 years, I am feeling slightly down today, now it's all over.

I think that it was great and felt a little patriotic . I went down Saturday and the atmosphere around Buckingham palace was great. I thought the open and close ceremonies were something to be proud of too. Pleased nothing ruined it and hope it brings some money into the country now moving forward.

They did a lot better than I imagined they would but its hard to see how even the majority of 9bn would be recouped unless they are playing the long game and getting money back from the newly built facilities. The stadiums werent packed to capacity early on which says to me that tourism wasnt just as booming as predicted.

I always thought the post games tourism market would flourish as a result of the games and what was broadcast to the world rather than the "usual" numbers of people attending these events.

I was looking forward to the games coming to London, but then with changes made to our work shift rota to accomodate TFL demands, all annual leave cancelled for the entire summer holiday period (July 15th until Sept 16th) and no real bonus scheme or consultation, I was getting more and more sick of the London 2012 build up.
But......as soon as it all started on the opening ceremony night, I was hooked, and quite honestly I can say it's one of the best things that has happened in my 40 years lifetime.
I am now frantically looking for Paralympic tickets, with no luck!!!!

Didn't watch it as I don't really get sporting events, I find them boring tbh. Was it a waste of money imo? yes but for all those people who enjoyed which many did, I'm sure it certainly wasn't.

Overall, we did a good job. No idiots spoilt it. And most of the contractors delivered as promised (thumbs up Total-fabs in Birmingham for the excellent work on fabricating the stage gear).
Although I don't think its worth the expense, certainly for the UK as a whole - only London will benefit in the main. It would have been nice to have had that level of investment put into somewhere away from London for a change.
What will happen now to sucessfully re-utilise the soon-to-be unneeded Venues and claw some money back will see if any chickens come home to roost. I for one can't see the main stadium being any good as a footy ground with the track around it and its certainly too large for all of the local clubs.
