Found a independent no frills carpet place locally and they've always sorted us out without costing the earth. I would suggest looking at whatever carpet warehouses you have locally & avoid the big chains (Allied etc.)

-Go to carpet shop
-Chose the style you like
-Get salesman to price up material plus fitting if required.
-Pay

I know it's a little complicated, hence the step by step instructions.

As above - a reasonabl carpet shop will advise. Have a look around first and get a feel for quality and price. Black is usually just for nightclubs and ***** houses though.

Do people still fit stairrods?

Yep but range from £8 to £75 per step so fitted your gonna be looking at around £150 on top of the fitted carpet cost for the lower end of the scale in stair rods

Avoid Carpetright, their carpets seem a reasonable price but their fitting is stupidly expensive, you get a far better deal at a local independant shop in my experience.
