Default Buying pre owned watches

Having turned down the opportunity to buy an automatic Omega a few years ago I have regretted it ever since, especially as 2 months later the prices shot up by 80%.

However I thinking about getting a pre owned watch from and quite like the Tag Heuer 2000 series and aquaracers, nice watches but with so many fakes around I am very wary.

Parkers Jewellers in Sheffield seem to be quite popular and I have noticed a very good priced one at the local 'The Money Shop' but is this any guarantee that they will be genuine as neither of them are official suppliers and rely on their own 'experts' opinion. Which would you buy from? Parkers are jewellers and should know what they are talking about while The Money Shop are a large chain where it would be more than their reputations worth selling a fake watch for genuine prices.

an established shop has a reputation too keep up - so for me, Parkers
Moneyshop - would depend on the price....

Thats what I thought. I had just read some reports on incredibly good fakes that are hard to distinguish where they concluded that the only way to guarantee it is genuine would be to buy it from a authorised dealer. Didnt now if this was a bit over the top or if I should genuinely be wary.

Why do watches go up in value? Technology and engineering get ever more sophisticated and refined and so newer is better.

Without using a motor vehicle analogy, what is the reason for this?

Yeah, but why does it matter, new watches are not subject to increasing government regulations etc

This is the watch I looked at 4 years ago for £1400 from a highstreet retailer. I guess that 80% is inaccurate now! Very annoyed with myself for not getting it then.

That must just be who I am, plus I like people thinking Im loaded and successful and a second hand Tag is a good way of showing them that, so it will have to have the green and red logo so people can see it more easily. Ill have to put it on my credit card though as I cant really afford it as my benefits have gone on **** this month.

http://www.time2.co.uk/shop/g-shock-gw-3000m-4aer.html

thats mine now ive sacked all the expensive one

i did have a 1700 tag kerium and a 15 year old tag formula one, both broke and id been quoted 250 to 280 for inspecton and service + added cost of parts should they be able to fix. i hated the kerium so sold that on ebay.

my mate at works wife worked at tag in manchester so took my old tag in and had it fixed and fully serviced she charged me parts only 93quid. but i was told by her unless you buy the 2k plus tags, there all the same inside really and tag want you to buy new watches when they break hence why service is a lot etc

anyway if i had to buy a new watch then it would be a rolex as most of the guys i work with have them and there actually increaseing in value, only downside is a service is 600 quid

omegas are nice, they do a nice one at 4.5k the new range.

stay away from leather straps as they start to smell pissy if you shower alot and sweat, go for rubber or metel straps. im one of these people who puts a watch on and ot stays on till it breaks, i shower work bath in it, i really cant be arsed taking them off. and my last leather strap lasted 4 months before it smelt like a damp smelly towel

Got a Tag 2000 series Im looking to shift on. Had it for 11 years and its an amazing piece of workmanship. I wouldnt hesitate buying one if I knew it was genuine.

Is that for an automatic?

I looked at a 2000 Series for £345. It was a quartz and yes I know people say you waste money as its the same as any other quartz watch etc but I do appreciate the build quality, styling and design. I have heard nothing but praise for the 2000 series and at that price think its a pretty reasonable buy, also they servicing isnt really much of any issue. Ive seen the newer aquaracer for £495 as well. Similar but more refined and updated look but Im beginning to hesitate at £500 for a quartz as for an extra couple of £100 you could get an automatic Oris.

The aquaracer is around 1/2 new price. The 2000 series isn't made any more (well only in the form of the aquaracer). I wouldnt be paying that if it was a private seller but the increased reassurance that it would be genuine and offer a considerable saving is appealing.

Rolex would be lovely but show me a modern one that comes close to £350-£500

I want to get the older style Omega seamaster, but the limited edition 007 one and they seem to keep on rising in price.

I saw one sell on ebay with a no reserve and it went for £1300 which was a bargain, most of them have been going for £2k+ (especially in the shops) and they are pretty rare.

Example: http://www.watches.co.uk/watch_pics/...07-om12966.jpg

While we're on the topic of watches, my Fathers Rolex Daytona:

Hmmm... didn't realise that - I've just checked what my 16610LV is now worth and it seems to have appreciated very nicely, not that I have any intentions of ever selling it.

Well this morning my wife gave me a lie in, snuck out and bought me the Tag Heuer Aquaracer for quit a good price. I've had it confirmed this afternoon by 2 separate sources that it is genuine as I would have expected so really pleased with it, especially as it was £310 cheaper than one of the jewellers who verified it had one for (although his one didnt have any black paint worn off).

Will try and get a picture up in a bit.

Is everything genuinely half price? Or just the watches that dont generally shift. Ive been to a few and find that the popular stuff is the same price and it is more of a 1/2 price dumping ground for gear that isnt.

Either way a bit late now, lol.

I have an Omega Seamaster automatic that rarely sees the light of day if I'm honest, I keep it boxed as I don't want to damage it, I'm starting to think though that if I'm not going to use it then there's no point having it, so maybe I should just wear it all the time? Hmm

Is it the older model or the newer black dialed one?

A couple years old now, around 4 I think.
It's blue dials.

Infact it's same colour scheme as the 007 edition you posted earlier, just without the 007 bit.

And there's me trying to decide between an Accurist or Casio G-Shock for my 30th!

I've seen some companies offering 0% finance on tag watches. Really, why the hell would you spend 4 years paying off a bloody watch? Even when my mrs said to me last night, 'Well, if you really like it?'
It's a ****ing watch sweetheart!
