Any advice....

During switchover channels may come and go. After a couple of weeks itll all be over. Usually you will end up with better reception and maybe even more channels. Some unlucky people end up losing channels, which Ive read about, but I think that this is extremely rare and unlikely.

Iv looked at what is supposedly available from our local ( relay) transmitter and presumably this is all I can get , but mates offered me his super duper hi gain aerial
Which he claims will net me another 100 channels ( not that I want them! )

Ages ago, fairly painless from what I remember and now my Panasonic plasma picks up 4 channels of FreeviewHD (BBC1 HD, BBC HD, ITV1 HD & Channel 4 HD, occasionally the beeb have an extra one on the red button too i.e. during the olympics). Everything to gain as far as I'm concerned

Yep. But the TV has a built in digital box for freeview. Now, the powers that be said that when the switchover takes place, the signal will be boosted to accomodate it which possibly has not happened and we have lost channels in the process (BBC1, BBC2, Dave, etc etc)

I'm assuming you are using the same....

The Entire UK wont be switched over until the end of this year. It was done in stages. I have been on digital for the last 3 years where I am, and yes remember the switch over process vivadly. I believe we lost BBC 2 Analogue first whilst the chanels were being switched over to digital. Then a couple of months later we were fully converted over to digital. Then it took a couple of months to sort out the channels we hadn't got through, and therefore the local transmitter power was boosted to give a better gain.
It also depends on where you live and if you have anything between you and the transmitter as well. I know digital is supposed to be better, yet it still can get blocked by trees etc..

If the signal is weak when you re-tune then you may lose channels which 5 minutes later will re-appear.

Check your signal strength (built into telly) and try to retune when it is strong.

Also may be worth disconnecting any intermediate devices (PVR etc.) and connect TV direct to wall socket to get best signal while retuning.
