If I call a hospital where I believe a patient I'm not related to has been transferred, will the hospital tell me if they are indeed there and, if they are, which ward they are in?

Basically, are you able to enquire about someone you aren't related to and get an answer?

My wife is a carer and many a time she has called the local hospital gave her name and asked if X is admitted and what ward, and more often than not its a yes and details of the ward location is given.
