Driving licence

Received a renewal form last month as I need to update the photo. That's fine although not happy paying the £20 fee to renew but back in January 2009 I received an SP30 and was hoping to get that removed in Jan 2013. So the main question is, am I right in thinking you can apply to get points removed after 4 years (which will be in Jan '13 for me), but you still have to inform insurance for up to 5 years? So my photo expires next month and I have to pay £20 to renew it, but come January I'll have to pay another £20 to get the points removed. I was hoping to hold out until January but have been informed it's a £1000 fine for driving with an expired photocard
So it looks like I'll end up paying £40 to renew the licence twice in 3 months.

Just leave the points on the license, its not like theyre effecting much, even if you pay to have to take them off the license as such, you still legally have to declare them to insurance companies for 5 years anyway so you are not actually gaining anything.

10yrs isnt it, unless you get drunk every 5 years and lose your wallet and apply for a new one
although: let me tell you thats the more expensive way of renewing

Yes, Dave's on the money. Photo has to be renewed every 10 years ![Thumb](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/thumb.gif)
That's a good point (excuse the pun)
but it bugs me every time I see the counterpart and I don't think I could cope waiting another 10 years
It also helps showing a clean licence to prospective employers, if need be. Knowing my luck though, I'll get the points removed and then bound to get caught speeding again

Are you sure though? I'm guessing I'm still entitled to drive (legally), so why the whole £1k fine business for an expired photo from the DVLA? I don't want to pay the fee to renew the photo because I still look the same as my last photo. I always thought the counterpart was the actual licence, not the photocard?

If its the photo cards licence, it's all to do with updating your photo every ten years,(stupid I know) and the older paper licences don't require updating.
That's Dvla for ya ....and the likes.
Leaves points on, I have mine on from 2006, I'm not paying to get it changed, I'll put money I'm my tank tbh.

I didnt realise mine expired and drive around for 3 years with it past its date. I watched a police program where they stopped someone who's licence had expired she sped up to let a son wave to the police car. He pulled her over for speeding but became more distracted with the fact her licence was expired. She had to renew it but it wasnt a £1000 fine as it was "less than 12 months expired". After that her let her off the speeding. Had she had an up to date licence she may well have received points.
I watched another one where a huge man was stopped for speeding, he kicked off, they had to get 3 or 4 more cars in, made a right scene but eventually calmed him down. they were so pleased with themselves at calming him down that they did bring up the speeding offence again in fear of setting him off again...there are some lessons to be had here...
