Default Has anyone got any good idea's for flexible working in a warehouse environment?

I work within a warehouse environment, 12 hour shifts, 4 on-4 off. Like everywhere we are looking at ways to increase flexibility, reduce costs. Basically Mon-Fri is normally busy, Sat and Sun quiet. We have already stopped covering holidays at weekends with overtime, but are always looking for new idea's.

Suggestions include.

1. Half day holidays at weekends. If its dead you can go home after 6 hours. Problem here is car shares, and if you at work, you may as well stay.
2. "Bank" a weekend shift. ie if its quiet you can not come in, but you replace it with an overtime shift during the week.
3. Instead of filling in the overtime rota (covering holidays, courses etc) weeks ahead, put your name down to be "called up" the day before. Not very popular as people like to plan, especially if they have kids.

Has anyone got any idea's, experiences from where you work.

I dont see what the problem is or what you are trying to achieve?

We work a 4-6-4 pattern in my work, 4 on, 6 off, 4 on, 4 off, 6 on, 4 off. Keeps the 4&4 just in a different way, 2 weekends a month in work, however, its no real different to your 4 on 4 off.

The problem is 18 per shift is fine for Monday to Friday. At weekends its too many people, therefore we are paying people to do nothing (or not much).

You did not pay them for nothing, you pay them for their flexability and you pay them flat rate on 4x4.
change rota for 5x2 and pay them 150% sat and 200% sundays then ,you will have less people on weekends but with higher rate.
Is not reason you ask here about advice ;you are new menager on this warehouse withouth any ideas and you wish lick boss ***, show him how good you are right.

How do you implement a 5x2 rota and maintain 24/7 coverage?
