Default Turntable problem

Hopefully someone can shed some light for me.

Ok so picked up a turntable for free off a mate, it's a Dual and quite old, problem is when i plug the phonos into the Hifi it plays but there is almost no volume, it is coming through but it's like it's on level 1 or 2, it's the same on the surround sound system, if i turn it up to max you can listen to it but barely.

Is it possible the stylus is shot, it's been that long since i had anything to do with record decks that i have no idea whats going on.

Have you connected the turntable to a dedicated 'phono' (turntable) input or just a set of spare 'aux' sockets ?

A dedicated phono input stage has a pre-amplifier to compensate for the characteristics of a turntable.

Very few modern amplifiers have this as it adds to the cost of production and not many people use a turntable these days.

You can pick up a phono pre-amp to allow you to use any set of spare inputs however, usually about the size of two *** packets, I think Richer Sounds sell a selection ?

The deck might have a moving coil cartridge, which has lower output, instead of the more usual moving magnet.

As above, It needs running through an amp or possibly the cartridge depending on the stylus.

Pretty much guarantee you have just plugged into any old input on your surround amp.

Are there any inputs specifically marked 'phono'?

If there is'nt an input specifically labeled for phono then you need to purchase a phono pre-amp, which you plug your turntable into, then the output of that into the amp.

Turntables need a special pre-amp, either built in, or external.

They range from dirt cheap to mega, as do most things hi-fi

I think others have covered exactly what I would suggest. Luckily my Technics turntable is set up on my 4 channel mixer on said deciated phono channel as opposed to CD/line-in. That runs through the mixer outputs then to the amplifier to the speakers.

Pre amp, BUT try another cartidge/stylus too as it may be old/worn and certainly not do your vinyl any good. Also check the weight so as when playing it doesn't skip OR dig down into the record to much.

Thanks guys, your right as usual, good old snet.

The surround sound just has audio in and the hifi is just external input, so no dedicated phono.

At least i know it's not a faulty turntable,my mate said the cartridge was barely used, just need to track down a pre amp doofer out here in croatia should be fun.

cheers.

I'd have one sent out.

Dual turntables were pretty good in their day.

The postal service for letters is ok ish but for anything that has even the slightest taxable value it takes weeks to clear customs, then i have to go and get it, which is about an 80mile round trip, plus tax and the third degree/roasting over hot coals, communism is alive and well in croatia when it comes to officialdom.

Managed to source one from a local musical instrument shop for £20 just waiting for it to arrive via camel train from the sudan.

Let us know how it goes.

Out of interest, what cartridge is on the dual?

Could be a Shure or an Ortofon, amongst others.

The turntable is a CS 514 belt drive semi automatic, i can't see a name on the cartridge, it has an emblem on the front which is a triangle inside a circle, it doesn't look anything special, it was free so beggars can't be choosers the records won't be played on any hi end audio system, as long as i can hear them i'm happy, just to bring back memories of my old man who most of them belonged to.

The cartridge? Not heard of that make. Shure, Ortofon, Pickering, Audio Technica all spring to mind from that age, but not Thorn EMI, unless they owned one of the above?

Lower down there was Sonotone......the 9TAHC was THE cartridge to have on budget decks when I was a kid, since we couldn't afford even the cheapest Shure.

AT it is then: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AT..._cartridge.jpg

We have a winner thats the emblem but mine is white so i guess it's a different model number.

Only 33 and 45 rpm, but none of the records are 78's so no worries there.

popped into the shop today as i was passing, the guy said he should have the pre amp by monday so ill be blasting out jimmy and bob on the mountain come monday night, should give the locals in the valley a treat.
