Default just can't get the staff these days

My work place is looking for skilled welder fabricators
25 to 40k depending on hours and experience
And we can't get any one
I thought there were millions looking for work and a recession ?
If you can't get skilled men in this economic climate it doesn't bode well for the future of British engineering

Where are the jobs going, as I know someone who has those skills and is unhappy in his current position?

I work in the lift industry, it's the same. Experienced engineers are not willing to move from a secure position,to a job that has a trial period..ect..

We are screaming for Engineers, Scientists, we pay pretty good wages - have a Final Salary Pension Scheme ........ Flexitime, Sports Club, etc.

Had a discussion with the Advertising Agencies ..... we have tried and tried and tried ..... nothing!!

Desperate isn't the word - trouble is, the kids these days have mickey mouse degrees - media studies and the like .......... pointless!!

It does seem that folk are not as willing to flit around these days
Or if a company has good skilled men they value them a lot more and try and hang on to them

I'm a quick learner, provide a company car with free fuel to commute and suppose I'll have to come in late then as I'm used to an early finish

i work in the service and engineering side of hgv/animal feed industry.i'm on 40k a year as engineers are in very short supply so to keep us the pays got to be good plus company van.i travel all over the uk do jobs that any good local engineer could do.but getting someone onsite to do it is like getting blood out of a stone.plus the young people that do apply for jobs dont have the drive to do the job.let alone basic skills like reading, writing and maths.our interviews should include a test using a tape measure as well as weld tests.it would save alot of time

I get the feeling that youngsters are not steered towards engineering and if they are they expect to jump straight in at top level
bypassing hands on experience , which is In my opinion essential
It seems they think if they have got to get dirty hands it's not worth doing
apprenticeships were so common , but getting less and less Nowdays

How long would it take me to train up? I wouldn't mind a second job on my doorstep.

I must be an exception to the rule then. I'm a time served apprentice as of last month at Tata Steel although I'm 28 and the average apprentice age when finishing is 19-23

Trust me, I don't mind finding out how things work by getting dirty under some caster slab, or sweating off bearings in a 400 tonne press. That sorta **** fascinates me.

As a skilled craftsperson (I'm not an engineer as I don't have a degree or the relevant qualifications - like most so called engineers that aren't) I'm on around the bottom end of your figure above but not yet on 100% wages so have an significant increase to come next year. I bloody enjoy my job and the variety it brings. Not so hot on quick turnarounds though, like I've got at 6am

Cob I think you are becoming an exception , and respect for getting stuck into your chosen trade
Like pslewis said the country can't maintain itself with half it's workforce qualified in things like media studies /philosophy

Our place offer engineering apprenticeships, and last time we took one on, only about 3 people turned up to the open day. We do them on a rolling basis. When one is done, we take another on. Seems not many people are interested.
We will be taking 80 people on soon, about 6 of them at a guess will need to be from engineering background. I think we will struggle to fill the non skilled operator positions, despite paying a couple of quid above minimum wage, never mind the engineers.

Too late, my eldest just packed in a job on the local steelworks doing that in order to go to uni.

Reason: low-ish pay, no possibility of a permanent position with Tata steel, and no advancement unless he WAS with Tata.

Gone to Loughborough to study engineering.

Hang on. Arent you retired?

Im confused. One minute you're "rich", the next minute, you drive a cheapo civic 2.2 diesel, next minute you're back in work discussing stuff with advertising agencies. I smell BS from PS !
