Financial Ruin ..... ???????????
.... it's been almost 5 years since the world went into financial freefall.
5 years .... and nothing has changed - not from where I'm standing anyway.
House prices dropped for 4 months over 2008/2009 - but have now recovered to their previous highs in 2007.
We cannot recruit enough people and have had higher than inflation payrises each year.
Everyone is just getting on with their lives, hereabouts anyway .....
I do realise, of course, as the history books show - that Brown and Darling saved the world by their immediate actions in 2007/2008 ........ we all know that Cameron and Osborne wouldn't have a hope in hell - being the little kiddies they are where men would be required.
Anyway ....... has the financial situation actually affected anyone on here?

I'm just asking ... as some of you are not in the South, trying to gauge if it's all over - or if it was ever a problem?
And what's a troll?

Do you think it's just being subdued?
I don't think it could have been suppressed for so long?
I seriously think nothing bad actually developed ..... it's a scam to reward Bankers and wipe out debts - that's all, I reckon.

Yes, I'm affected!
I'm getting richer but at a slower rate than I had anticipated.

Ive run my own little business 20yrs now, before the recession I was booked months in advance with heatings and combi boilers,a minimum of 1 a week.Since the recession we are fitting only a handful ,people arent spending.Although I can say I havnt had a day off work due to a lack of it,and we are very busy at present with work booked well into next year.

Other thoughts...
I don't think for one minute that unemployment levels are down regardless of what way the figures are manipulated. Part time working seems to be way for many. Less people in reasonably paid employment........you get the picture.
Price levels for gas and electricity will be or have already taken a substantial hike. Fuel prices? They are more than likely to increase early next year.
You don't have to be a housewife to know that most things in the supermarket have increased in price. In my experience wage increases haven't come close to keeping pace.
Conversely I've never seen so many pre-Christmas sales on the go which must be a sign of the times.
As far as I know the housing market is as flat as a flat thing.
Who would have thought also that banks will only guarantee £85k of your savings if they go kaput. I'm sure a few years ago the thought of this would have been laughable.
God knows when the youngsters of today will be able to retire.

Pete,
Do you think it was a good idea to overborrow this country into an enormous national debt in an effort to make the economy look strong and to buy votes when the economy was actually going down the tubes and the banks were left unregulated to cheat as they pleased?

They should have paid their taxes then - as far as the reports have it, no-one paid any taxes!! Tough luck, in that case!! Corruption from the top down!
True - a lot of work is Part-Time ..... but, nothing is stopping anyone bettering themselves - what is it with todays youth, wanting everything on a plate without the graft to get there?
Again, True ..... but, how many people actually get off their butts and move their suppliers? Not many - again, apathy and laziness which wasn't the rule 30 years ago!
There have been pre-Xmas sales for decades now ... it isn't a reflection on the economic situation, rather a reflection of what the buying public want to see.
My wages have exceeded those of the higher Supermarket prices, as a whole.
Lot's selling here in the South - there has really not been much of a fall at all, a stagnation maybe ... which is a slight fall in real terms of course - but nothing that cannot be coped with with ease.
I agree - £85k is a very low amount to guarantee in these days where 92% of the population have savings of more than that .... however, it was a lower amount a few years ago ... so, that has improved somewhat.
Very true ...... I have no idea at all. If you are 25 now then I expect you will have to work until you are 85 before you can afford to retire.
That said, 30 years ago the average age for a male dying was 67 - 2 years after retirement .... now, that sits at around 75 - 7 years later! That cannot be funded.
The newborns of today will die aged 100+ so they say - they will have to work until 95 to make the same maths work.
The world has changed - it will never be the same again .... for better or for worse.

Not buying votes - just doing what the world was doing ... borrowing and using leverage to borrow more.
Then the USA Housing Market got cold feet - and the house of cards came tumbling down.
So, in answering your question, no - with hindsight - it wasn't a good idea to borrow so much to pay for a batter Health Service and better Schools ........ just as smoking in the workplace wasn't a good idea - but was 'normal' in those days .... but isn't acceptable now.

It was acceptable to do that 10 years ago, Les.

I personally feel it was serious cheating to borrow in order to extend one's time in power and also to create a national debt that our grandchildren will never be able to pay off.

Ok, I'll nibble
When you are standing at the bottom of the sh it heap, it can't get any worse so of course you've not noticed
Yes, Pete, of course they have. But not on this planet
The things you have to do to keep fluffers in the job....
Yes, cashing the giro, spending the benefits on booze and **** as always. Not much to change really
Ah, forgot about spending the giro money on drugs too
This must be, what, the fifth or sixth time you've asked that question on here?
