Default Amazing images of the universe

Hi,

Thought I would share some great wallpapers I found on the Hubble Telescope site:

http://hubblesite.org/gallery/wallpaper/

I have downloaded all of them and got them on 30 minute rotation in Windows 7, awesome.

Makes you realise just how insignificant we are in grand scale of things, deflates the ego very quickly.

i cant look at the link due to my poor internet device, but i do have books of images from the hubble. and they are nothing short of amazing, from nebulas to galaxies and stars of all forms, i love looking at and trying to comprehend the scales involved.
cant help but be humbled by the vastness involved and ultimately the insignificance of our tiny portion of existance.

It really is incredible.

I've always wondered if one day in the future we'll be able to reach other galaxies?

That one picture of a galaxy says that it is 28million light-years away from Earth. 1 light-year = 6 trillion miles.

.....****.

..and estimated 200+ billion galaxies in our Universe, but god knows how many more are beyond our telescopes that we cannot even see yet. No way was this all created from a bang!!

The Crab Nebula is sixteen lightyears across. It's the remains of a star which exploded in 1054 (or was seen here doing so, to be technically correct). It is still expanding at something like 1500km per second. It still gives off a thousand times more energy in gamma rays alone than the Sun gives off in all wavelengths combined. That's an explosion.

Thanks, those are stunning images. I've posted this before, but I still can't get over how insignificant we all all in the grand scheme of things...

Was listening to the telly the other night and heard something new...........there is enough dark energy around to keep expanding the universe so it gets to light speed and then it will undergo the "Big Rip". Should be spactacular

Only need to wait 60 billion years LOL

It's a damn shame that those who would spend all their time killing each other don't sit quietly together and just look out there instead.
A couple of days of that and maybe they'd wonder what the hell it was they were fighting about.

My sentiments as well.

Its amazing, the scale of things, and we live in a fractal universe.

For example, if you look at life through a microscope, you will see them interacting very very quickly and they appear to have a short lifespan (because relative to our perception of time they appear to be existing for a short span of time).

Now take us humans for example, we have a perception of our existence on Earth and the universe that we exist in. Our planet rotates around the sun along with other planets, all relative to our perception of time (so we use this a measure to analyze and record the world we see).

Now take our galaxy...to us it doesn't appear to move at all however if we were to look back at ourselves relative to the galaxy we have discovered, we would appear like those tiny biological machines and life, moving very fast, living for a short period of time).

Take Stephan's Quintet for example, an absolutely stunning display of the cosmos:

Relative to our perception, we would assume that we can see what looks like a grouping of galaxies because we do not perceive their interaction and existence however that does not mean they are not interacting, just relative to our sense of time and movement they appear to be still.

They could be life forms themselves (inhabited by beings like us at some micro level), interacting with each other...

theres nothing more amazing than the cosmos we are able to veiw in our tiny period of existance. having half an undefrstanding of how things ard likely to work just makes things more amazing. once you get over the vastness of distance and relative time it becomes more understandable.
gravity is an amazing concept, along with fusion in stars. wow!

we are indeed so ridiculously nothing at all in front of this grand scheme of things. Apart from this reality check, cosmos generates very many perspectives and offers comparison opportunities in relation with the earthly provisions e.g. "In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order."- C.G. Jung
