right im fed up of waking up with a bad back,we have a ****ty old mattress thats is ****ed,we can get away with keeping the divan base and maybe just buy a new mattress or if we can get a good deal for around £500 for both we would be happy to pay for it.

anybody suggest anything?

im just over 6"8 and not far off 400 LBS so i need a large bed we have a king size at the min and if im honest is not really big enough,now is an ideal time to buy as its the jan sales

i bought one of those tempur mattresses, the medium firm one and im not going to lie, its f**king fantastic. apparently, you only toss and turn in the night if your not comfortable. since getting it most mornings i wake up in the exact position i fell asleep so maybe there is some truth in it, bit like when you fall asleep fully clothed after 15 pints of strongbow with a kebab on your chest and wake up exactly the same!!! also, if you have been to your gp complaining of neck or back pain within the last 4 months then they knock the VAT off the price. their not cheap but as you spend on average a 3rd of your life sleeping (or half if its my missus) then its a good investment.

yeah they are very expensive. they do a 30 day trial and you can send it back, but i would bet that you wouldn't want to. try one in a bed shop and you wont want to get off it! that said, there are some very good sprung mattresses out there with a memory foam top part. my old man had one from 'bensons for beds' £700 down to £400.

 

ive just been looking on their website,looks quality stuff.

might have to up the budget by another £100 or so

 

i could buy this but it means no money spent on the scoob for a long time

We have just bought a waterbed

Took the other half to see / try before christmas

She was initally sceptical, (its amazing how many myths exist lol)

We tried several types, starting with freeflow, moving through the many different levels of damping and finished up trying a mudbed, (100% damped)

Settled for a 95% motion damped

started with a standard softsided model, until she saw the rustic pine type Pushed the price up a bit lol

Intallation took a couple of hours.

First week was fun, with the bed comming up to temp, and the matress reaching full fimness.

In terms of short term cost its high, but in long tem, its quite cheap, with just the matress needing replacing in about 7-10 years at about £300

A memory foam bed will need replacing at about 7-10 years also and thats a whole lot more!

need to make sure youve got the right one for you.

Also need to consider what will happen if you roll toward your partner.

even memory foam dips when your that close. you dont want to be

I was concerned when I bought my waterbed,that myself and her indoors might drift apart,but we didnt and still loving the bed. It can take ages to get the firmness/temp/bedding just right....then it all goes wrong again when the weather changes

 

just try taking yr stash of weapons from under yr bed mate.... it might be a bit less lumpy

 

my one doesn't make us roll towards each other at all, quite the opposite. ive got the medium firm one and its amazing how quickly the memory foam returns to its original shape once you move, my missus can get out of bed and i never notice and vice versa. ikea sell cheap ones and i think they give memory foam mattresses a bad name, as they say 'buy cheap, buy twice'

 

I've retired from selling beds after 24 years but the best was always a pocket sprung mattresses with a good heavy demask on it tufted with plenty padding
Memory foam topper is ok on top of pocket springs
Make sure you can try it and it's not a one sided matteress only as you need to flip over and head to toe
Turn also
Memory foam only will dip after a few years and are very warm in summer as no ventilation

Spend over £500 for a decent matteress that will last ten years
£300 will last you 4 years
£200 will lastlast you 2years
Any less will last you a year to you feel the springs ll

From retailers the best but are are the ex display specials usually marked by feet etc

Shops are keen to offload them as they look bad on shop floor so look for40/50% off retail
Basically cost price to get the best ones from display

 

i don't dispute your knowledge at all, given your time in the trade but i have to disagree on the thought that memory foam ones are hot in summer. my tempur one is quite a lot cooler than previous conventional pocket sprung mattresses i have had in the past.

 

Our last bed was a pocket sprung heavy damask type.
Was a right royal pita when we had to turn it lol. took 2 people.
The side to side turn was fun, but the end /end was a nightmare.
We could tell it was at the end of its life, as it became very soft, and was possible to turn by one person.
The Divan base was a nightmare, with it coming apart everytime we moved the bed!
Hence our desicion to change away from that type of bed

re your comment on the memory foam being hot in the summer. A colleague i work with went for a silicon type memory foam, as they found the standard stuff too hot in the summer.

The inlaws have a memory foam topper, and there now finding it has lost some of its ability

We bought a Sealy kingsize divan and mattress a couple of years ago, pocket sprung with a cushion top, cost a fair bit but it was worth it. Never slept so well.
We had a cheap bed when we first moved in and it nearly crippled my back.

It's definately worth spending money on a decent mattress.

 

We were looking for a memory foam mattress a few years ago and found they were silly money, saw them in TJ Hughes just beofre they closed down for IIRC £199
The only oroblem we then faced was getting it home.... Mrs Fleetster had a KA at the time and we had both the children with us.... we managed it
dont think the passengers were very comfy though

Oh yes tempur were the rolls Royce of materess in memory foam and are
Very good
Memory foams toppers for £50 did a lot of harm to the industry as people bought
Them as a cheap mattress replacement
The cheaper memory foam materess do retain slight heat in the summer
As its basically solid foam dearer ones have more ventilation
Spend over £500 on a good mattress not £500 on a complete bed is the important thing

 

I've a memory foam mattress at home - I think its fantastic.
Can't remember the exact term, but its got some kind of 'clima cool' thing which helps keep temperatures stable.

If I remember correctly, it was around £900 reduced to £650

 

I'm quite a big guy too, and we opted for a Sleepeezee Backcare Ultimate 2000 mattress. Saw it in Dreams where it was called the 'Cairo' at £1150 (+£35 delivery, +£40 for 5yr g/tee), bought it elsewhere for £385 inc delivery and 5yr g/tee. We have a 3" MF topper to soften the initial feel, but it is VERY firm. When I was moving it upstairs I've never lifted such a heavy mattress, and unlike all our previous ones it wouldn't bend at all, making it very arduous to get in place. Three years on and it's still superb with no sign of sagging.

£299 now

 

Memory foam mattress, end of. They don`t have to be expensive like Tempur either.

That's one old saying that has more than a ring of truth too it & has served me very well.

 

We got a £500 memory foam matress for £125 the day we moved My wormorie leaked in the back of the van all over our matres, Vic walked into a bed place and said she is broke and needs a matress now...

The guy at Dreams damaged the shrink wrap and told her to sign to say it was damaged.

Was so weird opening it as it was a thin tube that once opened, expanded to a king size.

Only down side of a memory foam matress is that the wife can see everything you have done with the dog and the 8yr old neighbour!
