Perth and surrounding is fantastic.
Things to do:
Sailing, waterskiing, jetskiing, surfing etc. - anything water based is cheap and there are lots of beginners courses etc.
Rottnest Island is worth a visit - ferry to it every day
Freemantle is a great place to visit - old town (well old forAus )
Kings Park - wonderful city park
Whiteman Park - wildlife
Worth going up to Broome for a few days - lovely resort - even more isolated than Perth
Kimberleys if you get the chance and like nature - awseome scenery
Yanchep National Park - a great day out
Introductory flying lessons much cheaper there and with the weather a great way to see the country
Get a trip to Ayers Rock and stay at least one night... fantastic atmosphere at night
Cottesloe Beach is a great area
Northbridge if you like clubs and pubs
I presume you are hiring a car.... easy driving and very courteous road users.
You will love it!!

+1 to F1 Fan, & Funkii ( a great deal of help when i went)
The Beaches at perth are stunning, and if you dont want to travel, then thats fine .
If you want to go futher, head for Margaret River(sp)- Bunker bay is amazing
The bell tower in Perth is good to visit, as is the park and the huge flight of stairs.
Rockingham is good if you want to go on a wild dolphin trip (swimmin/photo's)
Weather at the mo is 29c (and raining according to my sister)
I'll get some pics up of my visit in Feb, and you can see what you think

Thanks for the reply guys.
We are planning a trip upto a place called Monkey Mia where you can swim with Dolphins etc. The wife went there when she was young so wants to return.
We are planning on hiring a car and exploring for a week. I was thinking about doing an internal flight over to the other side.
We have 2 sets of relatives 1 of which is in Perth itself and another that is 100kms south, they have a ranch/farm to play about on.
Some picture would be fantastic thanks

My honeymoon last year included Perth for a week where I also (since being married) have family.
I can only add to the suggestions above by saying:
1. If you go to Margaret river, the 'bushtucker tours' were excellent. We did the winery and brewery tour on one day and then the canoe and caves tour the next. Both excellent and very different so worth doing both. Think you get a discount too.
2. The tour of the tunnels under 'freo' (Fremantle) prison was great if you don't mind being underground, in a boat, in the dark at times!
We then flew over to Sydney. It's a great place too and obviously has unique sites, but if you pick sydney then be prepared for a shock to the system after the quiet of Western Australia!
And just to repeat, you will love it!!!

5 week break is perfect duration for visit to Australia - well perfect minimum anyway.
You'll find plenty to do. You will probably find it very expensive, so take up any hospitality on offer.
You are right to be aware of your fair skin, "slip, slop slap" as they say. That country ain't no place for whitey.
I would recommend a visit to the WACA for the third ashes test. Fri 13/12 to the following Tuesday.
ps If they ask what you think, don't forget to tell them that Australia is the best! (even in Koh Samui)

And if you have wheels, Margaret River wine region is 3 hours south of Perth. Lots of great beaches down there as well as world class wines. If you're down that way there's Busselton Jetty. It's 2 km long and has underwater observation facility at the end. It's walk-able though I believe the train is running again.
Mart360 is spot on with Bunker Bay :-) Dunsborough on Geographe Bay is worth a mention too.
@F1 - you were kidding about the courteous drivers, right?

Pontificating
Bunker Bay, nearly as nice as Hyams officially has the whitest sand in the world
But in short some of the best beaches in the world can be found in Oz, never packed out either unless it's Oz Day or you go to crappy Bondi ( I still dont get the attraction of that beach)

i put some car pics up in an earlier thread

I guess everyone takes drivers as they find them.
Generally I find drivers in Aus to be obstructive and Germanic in following any rules. Saves you having to use your brain (if you have one) I suppose.
One thing to be wary of is speeding. If you get a hire car, make sure it has cruise control and use it (like everyone else does) at all times.
Because the States cannot raise income tax, they will give any other form of revenue raising a good bash and speeding/motoring fines are at the top of their list. Expect zero tolerance and zero discretion from the police - in a friendly manner bien sur!
