The plain ham salad roll is great from greggs
I think its the slices egg that makes it taste so fresh
That said you cant beat a 12" turkey breast & ham sub, on hearty italian, with cheese, toasted, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, loads of gherkins & jalapenos with a dash of mayo.........followed by a bag of 3 cookies

We had a local made to order place, huge slabs of bloomer, with fillings almost as thick as the slabs of bloomer,
Usually a couple of quid, depending on the fillings...
It was relocated due to a fancy eatery place buying the site, and unfortuantly hasnt reopened
The fancy eatery place is as you can guess, usual average fare
M&S Ham & Mustard is ok, as is the rare roast Beef
Mart

Mixed cheese readymade one is good from Tesco. It's about £1.20, I think.
I bought small tubs of coronation chicken and chicken tikka fillings last week from Tesco. Both for £2.50. They did me for the whole week for work butties. I put rocket salad, some cucumber, tomato and onion slices to enhance the taste. I was pleased with them.
Salami, thin brie slices and chopped grapes one tastes quite nice as well.

Some don't like cold bacon in a butty, though. Even with mayo, lettuce and tomato garnishing.
SPAR around here has a deli counter where you can pick a hot bacon bap or bacon+ egg+ sausage bap. They taste good because bacon is warm in them. By evening, those hot counter butties start to go tough. They then get sold for as cheap as .30p. One would grab the bargain if one could handle a dry butty.

I have to agree with most of the above. Greggs do a good job, subway is a rip off and almost everywhere else is rubbish.
A notable shout is Oliver Adams, very Greggs like.

Independent sandwich shops are usually lovely, as is Subway.
Diet day- 6" wheat with ham, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, onion and honey/mustard dressing.
Non-diet- 6" Italian bmt with the same as above.
I'd kill for one right now aswell! Used to live a 2min drive from a subway, but not anymore :-(

We have a Philpotts at work and by and large theirs are crap as well, chewy bread, expensive and all the fillings are mush, putting salad or anythign else on is akin to optioning a BMW, you pretty soon end up with a sandwich costing a fiver.

My late father in law was the man who introduced the sandwich to Marks and Sparks many years ago. Even 20 years back it was difficult to buy a ready made sarnie anywhere other than M&S. No sandwich shops or fast food outlets even then.
He used to tell me about the science behind the sandwich, it surprising how technical it is to make a sandwich that has to last a few days, the hardest part being the barrier between the bread and filling to stop the bread absorbing moisture and going soggy.
