Geared myself up for a morning of doing little jobs on the car, only to find the garage door mechanism is jammed in the locked position on one side! I can't see any way of opening it without wrecking the door permanently, but I wondered if anyone knew any tips that might help me out? I've tried giving it a good wallop where the lock bar goes in to the frame to see if I can free it, but no luck - all my tools are locked inside too, just to make life easier!!

As far as I can tell its the locking rod not disengaging, but I'm far from an expert - thanks to those helping via PMs, understandable that you'd not want 'how to break in to a garage' info on a public forum!

After some pushing and pulling, levering and swearing, still no luck. A few people have suggested levering the door where the locking rod slides in to the frame, but I think the door has been designed with that sort of forced entry in mind as the frame prevents you getting anything in to where the rod fits (along the top edge of the frame, rather than the sides). I'm concerned that if I use much more force than I have been, I'm going to serious damage the door or the frame.
Its a new build house and we've only been in 18 months so I'll ring the builders and see if they can do anything for us, according to the makers website we should have a 5 year warranty. Just hope they can sort it before the Mrs needs her car...!
All the PMs with advice greatly appreciated, thanks guys
