Vulcan - Now flying through till 2015
Yay, as mentioned earlier, it looks like the old girl will now be flying through to 2015 ...

Over used word, but only "Awesome" describes the Vulcan.

The CAA won't allow the Lightning to be flown by a civilian agency because it is regarded as a very complicated military aircraft and therefore they do not trust its reliability factor.
I swapped trips with a Lightning pilot in Singapore once. It was a truly unforgettable experience, after I took off and pointed it skywards at an amazing angle the Lightning jock said "You might as well do a few rolls on the way up just for the hell of it...so I did!" Incredible performance.
When I took him up in the good old Vulcan and gave him control, once he had experienced its outstanding manoueverablity for a big aircraft he fell in love with it and it was all I could do to get control back off him! Big respect from his squadron mates when he told them all about it. They all wanted a flight!

Someone mentioned the exhaust note of the Vulcan.
There were two models of the aircraft in simultaneous service. The later one was developed to carry a large bomb clipped under each wing which was very heavy. To cope with the extra weight the Olympus engine was uprated to get a significant increase in thrust. You could easily tell which aircraft was which because the later one had much larger exhaust outlets on the engines. That was about the only obvious visual difference
I am glad to say that on our squadron we had the later ones which were more fun to fly with the extra poke from the engines. Those were the ones which could go vertical off the runway at the lower fuel weights
The earlier engines used to run at a different rpm and they had smaller exhaust outlets as described above. When you wound them up to full whack there was a harmonic frequency between the engines and the exhaust pipes and that used to produce a distinctive howl which was unmistakable. That was the reason for the different sounds from those particular aircraft while the later engines just used to produce a very loud roar.
Those who remember the Gloster Javelin night fighter delta aircraft will probably also recall the howl that aircraft used to make for the same reason when it was at a particular rpm setting and if anything was quite a bit louder than the earlier Vulcan.

Re what the CAA won't allow, well they certainly wouldn't allow the display I watched at Roborough airfield back in the 50's as a boy.
The Lightning came over the field, and right over the crowd, pointed it skyward on full afterburner. It was a warm day and got a whole lot warmer when he did that! Of course the crowd loved it, apart from the odd lady with singed hat..

I looked over the Lightning they have at Tangmere, it was mental, just looked like a huge engine ( more like a rocket) with a tiny little cockpit right at the front

east to west at no more than 300 feet was a Tornado GR4, wings swept going like a bat out of hell, must have been right on the legal limit of low flying
then about 40 mins later flying south west to north east was again unexpected, and I am prepared to be told its not flying.. A Buccaneer it was the air brake at the base of the tail that gave it away along with the air intakes beside the cockpit.... cant recall any other aircraft of similar design..
I just love this flight path I live on....

Tangmere & Goodwood are just doen the road from me, so we tend to get lots of spifires buzzing around....
Lat two weekends, we have been treated to impromptu low level displays of spifires as they flit in and out of Goodwood

I am very envious, I live between two commercial airports and see many planes each day, but none as exciting as those that you see.

The conical top hat is the trimmer for the flying controls,forwards and back for elevators and left/right for the aileron sense. There is also a small black button which is the radio transmit button next to the top hat. The nosewheel steering button looks similar, you push the rudder for the direction you want. It is at the base of the column handle facing the pilot. You push the rudder left or right and then blip the button for the steering in the required direction as you need.
