Default Astronomy App (for iPad)

As will be apparent I know nothing about iPads, hence this question.

My grown up son is interested in Astronomy and I would like to get him an app or two to work with his iPad which is a reasonable model I think.

Now I don't know where to start aside from Google which lists out dozens but which one? I thought I would be paying £50 - £100 for something decent but many are free!

Also do I need Android or iOS whatever they are and are they just downloadable or can I get something in a box like a CD.

Any recommendations please. For general interest in all things Sky.

Many thanks, David

Take a look at Stellarium

www.stellarium.org

It's available as an app for ipad as stellarium mobile at £1.49

Best way to give this as a pressie is to buy him an itunes gift card to the value of your choice and to write the name of the app in the gift card.

You can buy them from a few places on the high street such as the Apple store, Tesco, Asda.

He can then buy the Stellarium app plus a few other things - music - books - more apps - depending on how generous you are feeling!

HTH.

I use Pocket Universe, works well, never tried others. £2.99. Favourite bit is it lets me know when the ISS is overhead.

If you have iTunes or an iOS device you can gift apps
