Ban smacking?

Interesting one this. I'm in the 'never did me any harm' camp. This Children's Tsar wants to criminalise any physical chatisement. Is there 'good' smacking and 'bad' smacking? Who knows? I suspect it will become law eventually.

Another do-gooder who fails to see the difference between smacking and beating. She should **** off back under the stone she crawled from and carry on eating organic tofu in her wicker sandals keeping her holier than thou opinions to herself.
Today seems to be ripe for left wing stupidity:

Particularly nice retort from Rob Wilson

"You only have to lift you hand once to a naughty child, after that you only have to lift your eyebrows"
From the comments page from the above article, there's a lot of truth in that statement.

I agree - ban smacking/beating children
If you have to smack your kids you are doing something wrong, sorry
Father of 5 who has never smacked any of my children

It's no surprise that now there is no threat of a good old 'clip round the ear' be that by a parent/policeman or a teacher, that the younger generation have little/no respect for people or authority.
I'm also in the it never did me any harm camp.

A rare occurrence but I totally agree with your sentiments.
_____________
My son is two (3 in March) and I have never, nor never will smack him. A raised voice, taking away of toys and 'the look' has been quite sufficient so far in my first shot at parenting.
I simply cannot get my head around a fully grown man/woman striking a child who is smaller, lighter and much more mentally immature than them. Regardless of their relationship or the usual excuses of 'it did me no harm'.
Unfortunately my opinion is maybe skewered because I was regularly beaten pretty bad (hospitalised etc) as a child.
It's probably one of only a couple Conservative political ideas I don't agree with.

Yup, I often got a good belting at school only to go home and get another one for getting one at school!
It put me in my place 'for a while' before I started playing up again, only to be brought back down.
Different kids react differently to different situations. You could talk to me till you were blue in the face, a smack was the only thing that would sort me out.

Was it yourself who once said words to the effect "if you have to smack your kids to discipline them, you've already lost the battle"?

I got the odd clip off my dad.
It didn't do me any harm?
I don't have kids but I don't think its ok to go around hitting children so maybe you're wrong.
I do like to spank the monkey though.

Being a father myself I always talk to my children first and if they don't listen then some form of discipline will be administered to correct there bad behaviour, what needs to be taken into proportion is the term smacking it's not as if a smack should be comparable with a beating with a piece of 2x4 and it should not be put in the same category as a little smack on the bum.SJ.

Surely it's a case of context. Give a child a good punch for something trivial is wrong, a quick slap on the wrist to stop them doing something that may cause them more serious damage. Not so much.

At the end of the day I believe you have the right to bring your children up how you see fit as parents, obviously within reason. I wouldn't have the arrogance to declare my way as the only way, and other differing ways wrong.

One thing I find deeply saddening and highly distressing is when you see a parent in public belting their small child. I'm talking 2-3-4 years old, a real wallop, which they obviously think is within reason. And it's not just the scum class either.

Discipline is what's lacking these days. I was disciplined heavily and it did me no harm, it made me grow up and respect my elders etc. abuse on the other hand is something else.

You know when you see those kids at the shops throwing a proper tantrum , stamping feet , screaming till they turn red in the face etc. ?
My daughter only ever did it the once. She got a smack and a telling off. From that day on I never raised a hand to her , as she knew what was comming. Sure I was the "bad cop" between me and my wife from then on , but my daughter is 16 now and as good as gold . . . . .and knows when I am disappointed .
I think that it works for some , but not others. See friends kids getting told off with no success , if anything the kids feed off it ! And everyone is thinking the same thing . . .they need a good slap.

I've never had cause to smack my children, but if other people want to smack theirs, I'm not that bothered.
It does seem a little odd to me, but there are many variables at play here. Cultural, the children themselves, the environment they are in and so-on.

The problem these days with teachers is there are far to many of the 'softly softly' school of teaching, not enough of the old breed. I had a teacher in secondary school who'd manage to build such a reputation that no one would cross her and that was 10 years ago. So no cane or other physical punishment, simply the right personality and the right attitude that just commanded respect.
