Proof we are soft on crime.

While Cody has been convicted 35 times for 88 offences, many relating to driving and resulting in custodial sentences, PC Duncan " was 47 when he died and had been a police officer since 1990.
Surely it was just a matter of time before Cody did something like this.
How many offences do you have to commit before you are given a very long sentence (5+ years).Even the most liberal person can see that sometimes you have to come down hard on oxygen thieves.

Why drag the EU into it. Prison sentences are set by the UK justice system alone. No one else. As far as I know, there is no EU rule that sets limits on prison sentences.

Why not? It's part of the equation dragging the UK into the mire or do you have evidence that the EU is benefiting the UK?

So from these few examples, the EU has a large part in the criminal law of this country, and should be included

Because the EU mandates for example that we cant have the death sentence. The EU is forcing the UK to give prisoners the vote. The EU is saying we cant give whole life tariffs without the chance of parole. The EU mandates the legislation behind the Human Rights Act which gives foreign criminals the "right to family life".
So from these few examples, the EU has a large part in the criminal law of this country, and should be included

Z. I think criminals should have the vote. No taxation without representation. It's a fundamental basis of society.
3. Not exactly true. It is saying there has to be a process whereby a sentence can be reviewed. Bottom line is if we want someone to be in prison forever, we can do that.
4. I'm with you on that one.
However, in general, on the vast, vast majority of cases, soft sentencing is down to us. Nobody else.

While i have no syympathy for such people, no taxation without representation is a fundamental facet of British life. While it is horrible to admit, unfortunately many criminals get to hang on to assets while in prison. Conrad Black for example. Assets are taxed.

Agreed.......WE could do as they do, and just ignore laws that have no direct benefit to the UK, but we don't.
we enforce and follow every daft bit of legislation, then throw up our hands and shout "Oh, woe, look what that nasty EU has done to us...."
Our politicians need to grow a set.

Then your only option is UKIP as Miliband and Cameron won't be growing any anytime soon!
Cameron is even too scared to go to Scotland to address the Scots about their independence referendum and even when he went to Somerset about the flooding he wouldn't talk directly to any of the residents. He's pathetic and the only thing on his side is Miliband is as equally pathetic!

1. Capital punishment would not be part of the uk, with or without the eu.

Maximum sentances, and sentancing guidelines are UK set. Nowhere else.

I watched on TV how Lordy smith was chauffeured around in a 4x4,stood in a bit of water wearing his wellies.
If it is true that thirty million was spent on a bird sanctuary, but he wouldn't give four million to dredge the rivers,he wants shooting.

I stand by what I said, it's full of plebs, admittedly there are the odd few that has done something daft and ended up there through misfortune but over all it's a home off of the streets for plebs.
