Exactly. Royce Gracie is no bigger than me (dare I say it, physically weaker than I) and yet he managed to beat a few giants that are trained to fight. You don't even have to look any further than scoobynet, I choked out a big 6'2" guy myself last night. No permanent damage on him though so its all good. The only thing is, he was just a street thug and I'm trained so it wasn't a fair fight on his behalf.
edit ~ I love them Rambo knives. You can even go fishing using it.

Reliably informed by a friend (policeman) you can use reasonable force. ie you get threatened with a knife or gun and use a mag-lite/bar fine threatened by fist and use maglite = trouble. If you have a tracker I've always been told let them have the car and get it back with the tracker.
I'm sure i'd go for someone with a gun or knife using my trusty maglite, blind him first then kick in the b~~ls.
The laws an *** anyway, so maybe dreamweaver's got the right idea

sorry for being thick but how is a bright light goin to frighten off some hardened villain? wot u gonna do, take the batteries out, n beat him to death with the pointy terminal bit, when he comes for your keys? I carry a baseball bat, much more effective, and more importantly good for self defense, also a big rubber mallet can hurt, but wont break bones.

I'll make this simple........... pepper spray
or a nice can of de-icer!
Both work fine.
Not sure if pepper spray is permitted in the U.K. though?

Pepper spray is illegal I think. (almost positive!)
Big maglight for me Makes quite an effective club when turned around..and easier to convince the policeman it was in my car legitimatly - I'm not a very good liar and I think a bat would be pushing my abilites!

Pepper spray is illegal, but then again so is car jacking

You could use a Mag-Lite on someone who threatened you with his fists provided it was reasonable. E.g. he is much bigger than you. You could go all the way and kill them - as long as it was reasonable.
When I had my Scoob I carried a Mag-Lite and an ASP.
Cheers

Talking of lights I do have a 4D Maglite in my car which as the others say is quite heft. But you can get those little pocket blue lights that blind - obviously only good in the dark.
I also have an aluminium telescopic police baton that I bought in the states - its about 8 inches when closed but a quick flick and its a 28 inch baton. The same shop had electric stun guns and tazer pistols but I thought they were a bit OTT.
Golf clubs are always good as you cant get done for carrying them around, but a bit cumbersome to get out in a hurry and theyd probably get knicked whilst away from the car anyways.
Simon.

I have a crude but effective (hopefully ) home-prepared lethal injection in mine. Discreet, silent, hard to trace back, nobody would be expecting it. Mounted in easy reach but out of sight just under the steering column
It only needs to strike once - unlike a Maglite (unless you are very strong )

Carry for protection? No I don't. But you see, I have to take my katana with me in my car for martial arts practice everyday. Well, thats my excuse anyway.
