Default Mitsubishi Evo VI GSR

As a few of you know, my new car should arrive from Japan sometime in May.... an Evo VI GSR.

I like to think I know a fair bit about Subaru's, but I'm a novice with Evo's.

I know about the rust issues, hence the fresh import, and that the AYC is a bit fragile, but what else is there to look out for..... both pros and cons.

(Yes I know I'll get answers on the MLR, but want to ask here aswell)

Having owned a 6GSR my input is.

Rust obviously particularly behind the rear arches and rear doors are traps along with boot kid where it the number plate sits.
Rear diff has a couple of failures. Ayc pump but also can make a dolphin noise which is the diff itself has failed and will need a new one.
Check for leaks on the back of the box can mean new seals. All gears should be firm. If there is play can be expensive quite quickly. It's quick easy to bring the boost up with a change of restricter pill so check the boost level before it goes bang. The front bumpers are horrendously thin in the lacquer so peel is quite common.
Check the base on the front seat as they tend to work loose and can rock almost. If it's got the front fogs fitted make sure they have a good ground as some are retrofit after market. And enjoy it. If I sell the scoob could end up back in an evo.

Rust wont be a problem on a fresh import, get it inspected then undersealed as soon as you can....or it will be like a tea bag in a year
Transfer box weak point.
Crash damage .
Ayc pumps are cheap as , and it doesn't harm the car in anyway when it's fooooked.

Rear diffs

List goes on and on just like any other jap scrap

Don't listen to the old women on the mlr with the scare stories.

Buy it, knock the life out of it and move onto a 8mr or 9

Cool car Gary

I did ring you yesterday lunch time regarding insurance and left a voicemail on your answer phone because the chap told me you were on lunch break. I left my name and mobile number hoping you would ring me back.

Is it standard??? You might find it a bit tame compared to the Subaru if it is. Couldnt live with my old Evo 6 GSR with just a exhaust fitted(RR 320bhp)

On the other hand my old Evo 6 RSX, was like driving a different car, felt much more raw then the GSR and with the shorter gear ratio and No AYC or ABS, was much more involving to drive!!!(id have this car back in a heart beat, but saw it up for sale 6 months ago for £15.5k which is a lot more then what I sold it for)

Pm me your number and I'll ring you

Yeah it's pretty much standard.
With the Impreza it seemed like I was constantly modifying it but not driving it, so I'm not going mad with the Evo, just a filter/exhaust/re-map and use the thing.

I'm having Rich from RG Motorsport give the car a once over when it arrives just to check it, fingers crossed it's as good as promised.

I said the same thing to my missus when I bought the 6 GSR, My exact words where "Im not modifying this one, all im going to do is full decat exhaust, filter and map it on BP 97 Ron petrol(nearest petrol station at the time) and drive it everyday"

tbh ive said that about every car ive owned!! I never learn!!

I don't think they made an Evo look half as good again until the X.
