Ok so heres the deal then. I had an accident in my subaru impreza and basically wrote the car off. So im on the look out for a new car so thought of a 4.4 v8 x5. Anyone had any experience with them. Ive got a limit of upto approx 6.5k. I know the engines themself are pretty much bullet proof as my dads 523 made 309,000 miles before it started costing too much.
Whats peoples views on them. Anything too look out for?

Set of tyres 1200 quid !!!
My sister has one - bought it to be in with the other shcool run wags !
Costs a fortune to run, service, tax, (think she has the big petrol one),
Drives like a barge, not even that big inside (boot space).
Other than that great car !
I think she wishes she bought the XC90, which apparently went better, was bigger inside and I assume wouldnt cost quite as much to run?

Theres a lot of mixed reviews so i guess its a case of choosing very carefully. Other option is to go for a range rover. Im looking at the 2002 e53 4.4 v8 version atm. The fuel price wont really be no different to a subaru impreza either but its the maintainence side i know can be quite disheartening. So just wanted to hear from other membes 1st

I think the reality is that, with a few exceptions, most cars are pretty good/reliable these days
and it is how they are driven/cared for
you will always get a few silly design issues on any car
maybe people who buy on various finance contracts - where they simply "rent" - rag the t1ts of them as they have little emotional attachment to them
couple that with someone who has little mechanical sympathy and I imagine it all goes to rat **** quite quickly - on any car
we had some family friends around the other day - they have a Touran - nice car, it is only a few years old, but totally fvcked - they are simply really hard on their cars
so buy on condition

Don't buy a cheap old expensive car if you think it will be reliable and cheap to run! We had a 2003 Range Rover 4.4 and after 2 years and throwing thousands at the thing we gave up and got a newer car.

I've recently bought a 4.4 on an 2002 it's a great car front tyres 99 quid each brake pads 40 quid nothing scary price wise for parts I'm getting 18 mpg around town and 22-26 on run
Avoid the diesel one as there prone for turbos I think it's like anything look after it and you won't have a problem.

The older x5s had gearbox issues when worn if auto, watch out for a clunk when on test drive when at a stop (engaging 1st gear), look for one with good service history, other than that there's not much goes wrong if looked after.
Obviously expensive to run.
The newer x5s 3.0sd have oil pump issues (so I was told by the dealer when I gave it back as it was very expensive repair) very nice cars, bought it as I loved the look of them, only had it about 2 weeks when the pump went and gave it back as he blagged me into the sale and I didn't really need something so big with the running costs for a daily.
