What year / model?
Considered one before buying the 535d, the B7 4.2L V8, but got put off as the general consensus was it was just as expensive as an RS4 to run but not as good.

Had a B5 S4 Avant. Lightly fettled with. (twin turbo V6).
Total sleeper - shocked a few things when I overtook with the Labrador at the back window.
Ultimately quick in a straight line. But a bit of a bus elsewhere. And quite boring.
Sold mine for a mk5 golf gti

Its a B8 2010 v6 so its lighter has much better economy than the old v8 similar bhp but more torque.
it says V6T on the flanks but is supercharged.
Don't know about handling compared to the old B6-B7 but by all accounts handles much better and cant find any negative reviews beyond the usual comment about numb steering which it does have to some extent.
So far loving it, feels easily as well planted as my old PPP'd hawkeye Impreza but light years ahead on fit and finish.
Apparently its 20,000 or 2 years servicing so as far as costing nearly as much as an RS4 I doubt it and as for being not as good see here

I'd never had an auto up until getting the BMW, wouldn't entertain the idea, but the 535d doesn't have a manual option. Must say the ZF box isn't half bad, I have the sport option with the flappy paddles so you can take control if you want. Supposedly it can also lock the torque converter when the computer chooses to so losing the slop normally associated with a true auto box. Would like to try one with the 8 speed ZF box one day.

Just bought myself an '08 S5 as a treat after years of driving a runaround. Don't care that it's the V8 and drinks fuel. Puts a smile on my face every time I get in it and like you I have 12 months warranty from Audi. Pleased is an understatement! Nice car by the way. Very understated.
